Randomness and quantum entropy w/ Carlos Abellán from Quside [online]

Detalles

In our first edition of Quantum (Beers) Barcelona in 2021, we are pleased to have the co-founder and CEO from Quside Technologies, Carlos Abellan, as a guest speaker! Due to the ongoing restrictions, this event will be held online via Webex (link and password below)

Randomness and quantum entropy

Randomness is at the basis of many IT protocols and technologies, including encryption, computation, gaming, or cryptography. In this talk, we will review the critical role of good randomness generation on the different fields of application, the challenges in building such hardware devices, and Quside’s fast quantum entropy source solutions for this field.

About Carlos

After his studies in Telecommunications Engineering and Photonics at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Carlos pursued a PhD at ICFO – The Institute of Photonic Science. There he worked on the development of an ultra-fast quantum random number generator (QRNG) based on phase diffusion in semiconductor lasers (C. Abellán et al. Ultra-fast quantum randomness generation by accelerated phase diffusion in a pulsed laser diode, Optics Express 22, 1645-1654 (2014)). This QRNG was then a fundamental building block for the first successful loophole-free Bell test conducted at QuTech (B. Hensen et al. Loophole-free Bell inequality violation using electron spins separated by 1.3 kilometres. Nature 526, 682–686 (2015)) that finally contradicted Einstein’s theory of local realism – a milestone experiment. Carlos further pushed the miniaturization of the device in form of a photonic integrated circuit that made possible a seamless integration into the IT infrastructure (C. Abellán et al. Quantum entropy source on an InP photonic integrated circuit for random number generation. Optica 3, 989-994 (2016)). Consequently, in 2017 Quside spun off from ICFO as a startup to bring this exciting quantum technology to the market. He is truly a figure in the Barcelona quantum ecosystem and for his progression and innovation, he got awarded as one of 35 Innovators Under 35 by the MIT Technology Review in 2018.
