La subida al Peñagolosa por la Canal es una de las rutas más clásicas y bonitas para alcanzar la cima del “Gegant de Pedra” desde el Santuario de Sant Joan de Penyagolosa.
El camino arranca entre pinares y prados de montaña, con una pendiente suave que permite calentar piernas mientras se avanza por sendero bien marcado. Poco a poco el terreno se vuelve más pedregoso y el bosque se abre, dejando ver las paredes calizas del macizo. Al llegar a la Canal, la ruta se encaja entre laderas y la subida se hace más directa: el sendero zigzaguea con decisión, ganando altura de forma constante, sobre piedra suelta en algunos tramos.
A medida que se asciende, la vegetación se vuelve más escasa y el paisaje más austero. Las vistas hacia el interior de Castellón y, en días claros, hasta el mar, recompensan el esfuerzo. El último tramo discurre por una loma amplia y ventosa que conduce sin pérdida hasta la cima del Peñagolosa (1.814 m), coronada por el vértice geodésico y la cruz.
Es una subida exigente pero asequible, ideal para senderistas acostumbrados a desniveles continuos, muy agradecida y especialmente simbólica por ser la ruta tradicional de acceso a la montaña más emblemática de Valencia.

The ascent of Penyagolosa via the Canal route is one of the most classic and scenic ways to reach the summit of the “Stone Giant,” starting from the Sanctuary of Sant Joan de Penyagolosa.
The path begins gently, winding through pine forests and mountain meadows that allow for a comfortable warm-up. Gradually, the terrain becomes rockier and the forest thins out, revealing the limestone walls of the massif. Upon reaching the Canal, the route narrows between slopes and the climb becomes steeper and more direct, with a zigzagging trail that steadily gains altitude, sometimes over loose stones.
As you ascend, vegetation becomes sparser and the landscape more rugged and open. The effort is rewarded with wide views over the interior of Castellón and, on clear days, even as far as the Mediterranean Sea. The final section follows a broad, windswept ridge that leads easily to the summit of Penyagolosa (1,814 m), marked by a geodetic vertex and a cross.
It is a demanding but accessible hike, ideal for walkers used to sustained elevation gain, especially enjoyable and deeply symbolic as the traditional route to the most emblematic mountain in the Valencian region.
