Hiking to Karlštejn
Detalles
Founded in 1348, Karlštejn Castle occupies a unique position among Czech castles. It is a massive Gothic stone castle, which stands on a limestone rock promontory (316 m above sea level) above the village of the same name and consists of several separately fortified parts. It was built by the Czech King and Roman Emperor Charles IV. as a place for storing royal treasures, especially collections of holy relics and imperial coronation jewels. The treasures were deposited in the chapel of st. Cross, in one of the most valuable preserved Gothic interiors in Europe.
