It's a flat walk, but a very long day, so you need to be fit enough to be on your feet for 8 hours. **British Wildlife Centre admission tickets are not included in the event cost.**

**British Wildlife Centre ticket information:**
Until 1 March, British Wildlife Centre tickets cost £13 online or £14 on the door. From 1 March, the price is £14 online and £15 on the door. Booking online is strongly recommended as 'on the door' tickets are limited and cannot be guaranteed.

**Route:**
This peaceful countryside hike explores the rarely visited corner of south-eastern Surrey around the village and ancient parish of Lingfield, near the border with Kent, East Sussex, and West Sussex.

The route is mostly flat, with only 150m of ascent, and follows a variety of rural paths and a stretch of Tandridge Border Path between East Grinstead and Lingfield. The highlight of the day is a 3-hour visit to the finest collection of native species of fauna in the country, the British Wildlife Centre in Lingfield.

From the station, we head south and soon pass Lingfield Park Racecourse, the busiest horse racing course in Europe. The racecourse was opened in 1890 by the Prince of Wales, later Edward VII, and boasts over 75 fixtures a year, including flat, jump and all weather jumping.

Continuing in south-westerly direction, we hike through breathtaking Surrey countryside, then an 18-hole golf course and then again more peaceful countryside until we reach Ward’s Farm, the highest point along the route. From here, we carry on north and then west, all the way to the main attraction of the day, the British Wildlife Centre.

**The British Wildlife Centre**, a private zoo specialising in British wildlife, was founded in 1997 by David Mills, formerly a dairy farmer, and is a unique, non-commercial, specialist attraction whose philosophy is ‘Conservation through Education’. It participates in captive breeding programmes, offers school and other exclusive visits on weekdays during term time, and opens to general public at weekends and bank holidays.

With **over 40 different native species**, such as red deer and roe deer, weasels, pine martens, red foxes, river otters, hedgehogs, Britain’s first walk-through red squirrel enclosure, free-flying British owls, badgers in the Nocturnal House and many others, as well as **keeper talks** which take place **every half an hour**, it is recommended to allocate minimum 3 hours for a visit, and we will combine this with our lunch stop; the centre offers two outdoor picnic areas where own food is allowed, as well as a coffee shop where only food purchased on site can be consumed.

After the visit, we follow quiet paths north and north-west of Lingfield as we make our way back to Lingfield station.

**MEETING POINT and TIME:** Lingfield Station, 09:41am

**HIKE STARTS:** 09:45am from Lingfield Station

**TRAVEL:** 08:50am train from London Victoria arriving at Lingfield at 09:41am, journey time 51 minutes. Return tickets from London to Lingfield are £18.20, or £12 with Network Railcard or Group Save when travelling as a group of 3 – 9 people.

RETURN: There are 2 trains and hour from Lingfield back to London, leaving at 13 and 43 minutes past the hour.

DRIVERS: Lingfield station, RH7 6EF, is 9 miles south of the M25 junction 5/6 Clacket Lane. You can park at the station car park, but it may be possible to park for free close to the station.

**LUNCH:** Packed lunch, picnic.

**HIKE FINISHES:** approximately at 17:00 at Lingfield Station, but finish times always depend on pace of the group on the day and are a rough estimate rather than a guarantee.
