What If Crazy Isn't Crazy?
(A Discussion Night on Conspiracy Theories)
For tonight’s Questions That Matter, we’ll be discussing contemporary takes on Conspiracy Theories.
For years, calling something a "Conspiracy Theory" was enough to end the conversation. The label did its job — discrediting the claim, discrediting the person, and protecting whatever was being questioned from further scrutiny.
But there’s clearly been a shift.
Each of these examples were once dismissed as paranoia before becoming documented fact: the Epstein files, the Tuskegee experiments, the tobacco industry suppressing cancer research, and global mass surveillance programs.
Our angle for this week's discussion on Conspiracy Theories is not going to be focused on who shot JFK or if the Earth is flat. We’re instead going to be examining some of the mechanics around belief.
We’ll explore why a structured, evil plot is often more comforting than a chaotic world run by incompetent people. How the desire for "secret knowledge" can also drive our egos and how we might go about establishing a baseline reality when we can't even trust our own eyes and ears anymore.
As usual at Questions That Matter, the goal of the night isn’t simply to agree, disagree, or learn. It’s also to connect through genuine, lively, interactive discussion and, potentially, to go to some of the unexpected and uncharted places that deep and free conversation can take us.
Since we started Questions That Matter, between 25 and 50 people have joined us weekly. When we wrap up, we hope you’ll mingle and exchange numbers. As polarized as the world is right now, one of the deepest connections still available to human beings is a shared meal, and every week many of us all go for dinner and you’re very welcome to join us.
Whether you’re in Chiang Mai for a short visit or you’re a long-term expat, we hope you can join us—not only to explore the deeper questions but to make new connections and friendships.
If possible, please support the venue, 4seas, by purchasing a beverage or a snack.
They're kindly providing the space for us at no charge.
See you on Wednesday.
