Workshop: Using Design Thinking to Improve Society and Democracy
Workshop: Using Design Thinking to Improve Society and Democracy
Our sister group, The Philosophers Bazaar, is inviting you to their next event in Melbourne. Do you want to address society's biggest issues but not sure where you'd start? Or, perhaps you're idealistic but struggle with concrete planning? Or maybe you just want to make a positive difference with others who also want the same? In this event, our special guest, Usha (with support from Nick) will use her expertise to guide participants in a workshop on how we can use Design Thinking to address an issue in society. Attendees will be stepped through the process and come up with their own plan they could realistically implement to make their communities or the world a better place. After the participants (democratically) decide the social issue they wish to address, Usha will guide participants through the steps of Discovery, Definition, Development and Deployment to create a blueprint for action, prototyping and hopefully motivation to address that issue! There is also potential here for attendees to form a committed group to address the specific social issue, that could be reiterated upon, perfected and implemented to make long-lasting social change. We have allowed 4 hours, but we will still half way for snacks (BYO) and a break.

Estuary (Balaclava) - Iran : Revolutionaries, Protestors or Terrorists?
**How Islam acts in the world** Reflecting on the recent 2026 revolution in Iran, we will dig deep into the political, spiritual and power motivations of Islamic movements in the world. **VIDEO** Coming soon ... **Discussion Outline** Thinking about how muslims want to rule the world and the historical basis for their ambitions. Is Islam a peaceful religion or a conquering empire? What is the motivation behind terrorists and suicide bombers? Do a minority of muslims support terrorism? Are all cultures created equal? Are all religions the same? Is the western media wilfully ignorant?
Sandringham beach foreshare walk
Sandringham beach foreshare walk
Join us for a refreshing Neurospicy Bayside meetup with a gentle walk along the beautiful Sandringham foreshore! This is a fantastic opportunity to connect with other neurospicy individuals in a relaxed, no-pressure environment. We'll meet at the **Sandringham Rotunda at 11 AM** on **Sunday 1st Feb 2026.** Here's what our walk will look like: * **11am AM - 11:15 AM:** We'll start with a short 15-minute out-and-back walk to allow for any latecomers to join us comfortably. * **11:15am onwards:** * **Walk to Black Rock:** we'll embark on a picturesque 90-minute walk from Sandringham to Black Rock and back (45 minutes there, 45 minutes back). You'll enjoy stunning bay views and beautiful trees along the way. We'll maintain a gentle pace, allowing for easy conversation as we walk. We'll stop in Black Rock and have a coffee/snack at a cafe. This walk is designed to be a comfortable and inclusive way to socialise. As we walk side-by-side along the trail, you'll naturally be looking ahead, which can be a more comfortable way to chat with others for many autistic individuals, removing the pressure of direct eye contact. **Wet Weather Plan:** If it's raining, we'll shift our plans! Instead of walking, we'll head to **Dzert Cafe**, conveniently located near Sandringham Station, for a relaxed chat over coffee and treats.

How do we and how should we make moral decisions?
How do we and how should we make moral decisions?
Please join us this Sunday as we discuss how do we and how should we make moral decisions. We will meet at the Captain Melville, 34 Franklin Street in Melbourne CBD, at 2pm for a 2:15pm start sharp. There is no pre-requisite preparation necessary, nor a philosophical background, all that is required is a curious mind. These discussions are both a Socrates Cafe style discussion and lively metaphysical dojo, in the spirit of learning and friendly debate, so please feel free to challenge assumptions and be prepared to have your own assumptions challenged. Glen will be leading the discussion this week. We have started to split into two tables to discuss as we have had increased numbers lately, and are looking for regular attendees who would be comfortable leading the discussion on the second table to put their hand up. Find below some questions to consider, however these are free-ranging events and the below serve as a springboard for the discussion. Some points and questions to consider * How do we actually make moral decisions? * Why and when do consequences and outcomes matter? * Why and when do rules, duties and principles matter? * Why and when do character and judgement matter? * When do reasons cause moral decisions, and when do they justify them after the fact? * When is moral disagreement a failure of logic, and when a clash of moral sensibilities? * Discuss cases where any option would violate a moral value. * How can we make better moral decisions?

Dale Gnidovec, Curator of the Orton Hall Museum of Geology at The Ohio State University, will be presenting a program he has wanted to share with us for a long time: Plate Tectonics. His description of his program: Continents on the move - Nothing in Earth history makes sense without moving continents - it tells us why mountains, volcanoes, minerals, and fossils are where they are. This talk examines the evidence for continental drift, why it was disbelieved, and explains how the more-encompassing theory of plate tectonics was developed and eventually proven. Dale is an energetic, incredibly knowledgeable, and very entertaining speaker and this will be another wonderful program by Dale. Hope to see you there! Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk. Going forward our meetings will be hybrid. COUNT RMH Housewarmer Volunteering (Ronald McDonald House)
Some trained COUNT volunteers work together once a month at RMH (http://www.rmhc-centralohio.org/volunteer.php) as Housewarmers (usually on the 1st Sunday from 1 – 5 PM). Some schedule other shifts at their convenience. You may try this out with less fuss by following a "Fast track" or go through the normal process. Fast track • Arrange a time to shadow a COUNT volunteer. Call Dave Nohle at 614-268-9558 (cell). • Show up and try it out. • Complete application, etc. later. Normal process • Complete an online application (http://rmhc-centralohio.org/volunteer/). • Attend orientation in advance. • At orientation you will complete forms agreeing to keep family/patient info private and allowing a background check and tour the facility. • Complete one training shift. Daily shifts are: morning 9 AM - 1 PM, afternoon 1 - 5 PM and evening 5 - 9 PM. • Schedule shifts online using the on the RMH scheduling system (http://www.volgistics.com/ex/portal.dll/?FROM=32895). The Ronald McDonald House (RMH) provides housing and meals for families with sick children. The Columbus RMH is the largest in the world with 137 rooms. COUNT has been volunteering there since May 2014. Housewarmers work with RMH guests to provide a home-like environment - greet, assist with family needs, answer phones, give tours, assist with checkin/checkout, prepare guest rooms after checkout, clean facility, laundry, restock supplies and staff the front desk. RMH Housewarmers volunteer at least one four-hour shift a month. All Housewarmers must complete an application and agree to a background check before they can be full fledged volunteers.
