Keith + Tina Return!! for a four part Irish Session Class! Saturdays 1:30-2:30pm 4/18, 5/2, 5/16, + 5/30 limited to 15 participants! Across the globe, the beating heart and home of traditional Irish music is the session. Whether it takes place in a pub or around a kitchen table, the session is where musicians share tunes, learn from one another, and enjoy good company. This course offers a chance to play traditional Irish dance tunes — jigs, reels, polkas, and hornpipes — while discovering how a session works under the guidance of two veteran session leaders. Join the acclaimed Irish duo Lilt — Keith Carr on bouzouki, banjo, and mandolin, and Tina Eck on flute and whistle — for a multi-week journey into the music and magic of the Irish session. The course will culminate in a celebratory session and potluck gathering for friends, family, and the public. Each month Noah Gitlis teaches a different Jazz Standard with emphasis on melody, harmony, accompaniment, and rhythm. The goal of the class is to help students boost their jazz repertoire, and build the skills required to feel confident in a jazz jam session. These classes are a lot of fun and a great way to get out and play with other people while learning some really fun music. All instruments and skill levels are welcome but students should have basic proficiency on their instrument to get the most out of the class. Both books are easy to find and order online. 2. Feel free to bring lyrics and chords to hand out for songs not in the book. If you'd like to bring a song that most people don't know well, see if you can find a YouTube link and post it in the comments when you RSVP. We'd like to listen a few times before the SOJO to get the hang of it. 3. Bring something to drink, as singing is likely to make you thirsty. 4. This will be a new venue for our jams and will probably be more accommodating to access for many of our DC Rockers members. The studio is located near the Mosaic District in Merrifield on the eastbound side of Lee Highway (US-29). We'll be in Studio A on the first floor of the studio which is mostly-equipped with a drum kit, keyboard, sound system, amps and mics. Attendees will be expected to bring their own instruments but should not need to bring amps or speakers. In this monthly workshop, you will learn the fundamentals of proper vocal technique and practice singing in harmony with others. Each class will focus on different vocal exercises and aspects of vocal technique, including breath control, diaphragmatic support, upper and lower register, vocal placement and blending, vocal agility, engaging vocal performance, and more. Additionally, in each class you will learn a folk song to practice singing harmony together. Picture the Grand Ball scenes like you’ve seen in period films such as “Pride and Prejudice”, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. That’s English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like “swing your partner” and “do-si-do,” like you’ve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alá “Riverdance.” Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude. THAT’s Contra Dancing! Wear cool and comfortable clothes (you will get warm) and clean shoes that won't mark up our nice wood floor.
