🚀Moon & Orion Artemis Rocket Rendezvous Stargazing 🌕With Telescope
🌌Ever look up and marvel with insatiable curiosity at the beauty and wonder of the **universe?** That wild sobering thought that somewhere in the chaos of creation - the emergence of life - the universe became **conscious** enough to look back in time and not just ask the existential questions, but try to answer them.
And now, in our own small moment of cosmic history, as we return to the Moon aboard the most powerful rocket ever built, the **Artemis mission** carries that ancient curiosity forward. As the manned **Orion spacecraft** -currently just 18k miles from the moon - reaches its closest approach, join for the last chance to view the **Orion Nebula** through a telescope as the historic lunar rendezvous unfolds above us.
🚀 **But there’s more celestial wonder**: As those four astronauts venture deepest into space than any humans have ever been before - we’ll tale a look at **Venus,** **Jupiter** along with planet's potential life‑harbouring **moons**, iconic beautiful **star fields**, the remnants of supernovae witnessed by our earliest ancestors, **multi‑star systems** reminiscent of the twin suns of *Star Wars* and even **Tau Ceti**, a star hosting two Earth‑like worlds in its habitable zone.
All of this under the spring evening - with drinks, engaging conversation, and good‑natured banter — this April. In between observing - we'll have **drinks and engaging chats** on all astronomy related topics for those inclined: Space exploration \| Fermi Paradox \| Astrobiology \| Cosmology \| paleontology\, \| SETI & Drake Equation for alien civilisations estimates \| exoplanetology etc as well as non space chats and banter too\. No doubt we'll hear the usual jokes we've all heard before\! If those don't make you laugh\, my impersonation of Los Angeles ET will\! 👽
And to help set the mood and make the night feel even extra galactic, I’ll put my DJ hat to play some space‑themed tunes and songs about the stars!
You don't need a telescope as you will be able to view through scopes belonging to me and other club members (as long as you behave responsibly and don't temper with expensive equipment). If you have your own telescope/binoculars feel free to bring along and I can help you setting it up if you're a newbie
**==== ITINERARY =====**
We will meet outside H&I Station in Highbury Islington. After a short wait for anyone delayed, I will escort everyone to our observation point in the local park 5 minutes walk away and brief you in terms of what to expect, observing etiquette, tips, equipment handling and take any questions you have - weather general or astronomy/cosmology related.
**After Drinks:** Unless I have a very important 9AM Tue deadline for a unfinished client presentation or something - most of us usually head to a cosy bar for a drink. If so - I will annouce the pub when we leave the park
**==== What Can You Expect To See (this time of year)? ====**
* Orion Nebula
* Jupiter and 4 moons
* Meteors
* Andromedia Galaxy
* Star clusters such as the Pleiades & Owl Cluster etc
* International Space station fly by
* Binary & tripple star systems (think planet *Tatooine in* Starwars!),
* Neptune
* Uranuus
* Our moon
* A look towards the galactic centre of the Mlikyway where that supermassive £22b Labour black hole sits (Sagittarius A)

Easter Monday Green Walk Round Billericay + (optional) Pub
Please note the slightly later start time on this one.
Brian (a former member) was going to do this walk four years ago, but a lot of people thought it was too far. Now that we've been to Shenfield, I thought I'd have another go at going that one station further to Billericay in order to do something different for Easter
So, it is one stop on from Shenfield, which is on the Elizabeth Line from Liverpool St. Shenfield is covered on your over 60's Oyster/freedom passes, so you'll only have to pay for one station if you have a free pass.
If you are driving, there is a free car park very nearby in Lake Meadows Park, which is open until 9pm. Walk a few minutes over to the station for 11.30am.
The meet point is outside Billericay Station at 11.30am. We'll be going through Lake Meadows, and on through Norsey Woods to Break Egg Hill . We will then pass through Norsey Meadows and exit the woods through the Norsey Close.
We'll then head for the (optional) pub for some well deserved food and/or drink. Non-pubbers have got a few mins walk to the station.
Norsey Wood is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), a Scheduled Ancient Monument and a Local Nature Reserve. Apparently the paths there date back to the Iron Age.
I ask for a nominal contribution of £2 to help cover Meetup organiser fees. Or you can pay £4 to cover the rest of April (hopefully three more walks). Some pay £20 to cover a half-year. No shrapnel please.
RISK WARNING/DISCLAIMER: Please remember that as with any physical activity, there can be dangers associated with hiking/walking, especially around waterways, forests, farms and countryside. Your decision to voluntarily participate in this activity is an informed decision. and by attending this event you agree and accept to take sole responsibility for your own actions, your own safety, and your own belongings.
Please dress appropriately, including sturdy shoes. Please bring any necessary medication with you. You will need to be sufficiently fit to walk several miles at a moderate pace. We may occasionally cross or walk short distances on roads; country and woodland tracks can be muddy or slippery; animals may be encountered on occasion.
INSURANCE: If either yourself or any guests you bring along require insurance for this walk, then you must arrange this yourselves.
GUESTS: If you are bringing any guests along, there is no facility on the Meetup site to record their details. Please ensure that you make them fully aware of the Risk Warning/Disclaimer and Insurance statements.

Bank holiday hike: Friston Forest, Cuckmere Haven & the most stunning sea views
Hey, Hey, Hey! It is bank holiday and what do we do on bank holidays? We join me on a fabulous trip. :)
This is one of the most fantastic coastal trips in the country and we are doing an easier version of it. There will be a few inclines but nothing like the nearby Seven sisters that you will see in the background so if you would like to enjoy walking in a living painting, join me for this trip.
We will start and finish in the seaside town of Seaford, walk these gorgeous woods of Friston alongside pretty cottages and flowery gardens before we head back to Seaford for a well deserved diner or a pint or to London if you do not wish to stay along for some more laughter.
And last but not least, the view of the Cuckmere river sneaking in the valley all the way to the sea is my favourite postcard view in the country, you could almost hear Vivaldi playing Spring in the background while unicorns and fauns are galloping in the fresh water. Really, do not miss it.
The hike is around 11 miles and medium, although there will be a couple of inclines.
A BIT OF HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY.
FRISTON FOREST:
Friston Forest is within the South Downs National Park between Lulington Heath National Nature Reserve and Seven Sisters Country Park. It is the largest area of recently established forest in South East England, it has extensive carpets of Bluebells in late April to mid-May and some of the most stunning autumnal colours at the fall.
CUCKMERE HAVEN:
It is an area of flood plains in Sussex, England where the river Cuckmeer meets the English Chanel between [Eastbourne](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastbourne) and [Seaford](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seaford,_East_Sussex). The river is an example of a meandering river
The beach was commonly used by smugglers in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. For example, in 1783 two gangs of smugglers (each numbering 200 or 300) overcame officers of the law by weight of numbers and carried away a large quantity of goods. It is one of the most visited beaches in the UK.
PICTURE PERFECT:
The Haven and the nearby cliffs offer some of the most stunning photographs you will ever take, the purple sea thrift flowers adding an impeccable touch to the white and red cliffs

IMPORTANT
Please bear in mind this is a free of charge, self-guided trip with a hobby group. It is not organized by a business nor any entity with commercial purposes.
Any trip details, travel advice, route planning, instructions and other content in our group merely represent our shared personal knowledge, research and suggestions as outdoor enthusiasts. As this is no business, there is no "product", "service" or "package" and also no "tour guide", "operator" or "walk leader".
Each participant is responsible for their own safety. Even if some of us are very experienced walking outdoors, nobody assumes responsibility for any kind of injury, damage or loss that may happen.
Despite this, we take extreme precautions and all trips we plan are very safe, fun, highly educational and popular. Our experienced members volunteer their time and effort to shape a pleasant and quality adventure for everyone :-)
By participating you acknowledge and agree with this disclaimer.
Here are our tips on staying safe during outdoor trips:
http://www.meetup.com/Free-Outdoor-Trips-From-London/about/
TRAVEL, ACCOMMODATION, INSURANCE
Although we provide detailed suggestions, each participant is expected to arrange their own travel - this gives everyone the freedom and choice. Anyone interested in travel or outdoor insurance should also arrange this on their own. As mentioned above we always take extreme precautions, but some people may still feel safer if covered.
As most of our trips are confirmed or postponed very close to the event date - heavily depending on the weather forecasts - we advise not to buy this until the last minute. People getting tickets from the same station are encouraged to meet early on the day to benefit from discounts such as GroupSave.

We will take you on walking tours in the centres of these fascinating cities and by minibus to any monuments and buildings that are further away.

**Itinerary**
**Day One : Tashkent**
Arrivals in Tashkent
14.00 Optional Tashkent City Sightseeing Tour including:
Old Tashkent - The Last Imam Ensemble (16 century) with the tiled domes and minarets of its mosques and madrassas as well as the famous Chor-Su Oriental Bazaar.
Modern Tashkent - The modern centre where Amir Timur Square’s statue of rehabilitated local Uzbek hero, Tamerlane The Great, has replaced a list of Czarist and then Soviet statues. We will see the Navoi Opera and Ballet Theatre which was completed by Japanese prisoners of war in 1940. We will see Tashkent’s earthquake proof metro system and have an opportunity to explore some of the most beautiful stations including Kosmonavtlar which celebrates cosmonauts and space.
Welcome Dinner at Caravan (included).
**Day Two : Samarkand**
After breakfast, an early transfer to the railway station to check in for the high speed “Afrosiyob” to Samarkand where we arrive just after 10am.
Trade routes from all directions formed a major Silk Road crossroads and emporium in Samarkand. Tamerlane’s city of sky-blue domes and minarets continues to awe visitors today as it has throughout centuries.
Our private coach will pick us up from the train station and take us directly to the Registan, Samarkand’s most famous sight and the greatest of all the grandiose and magnificent works in Uzbekistan. We will then take in the other sights which require coach travel, St Daniels’s Tomb and Ulugbek’s Observatory.
After checking into the hotel there is free time to enjoy a leisurely lunch.
We will try to see the Registan at night when it is beautifully lit. Quite often there is a sound and light show projected on the Registan at 8pm.
**Day Three : Samarkand**
After breakfast in the hotel, we will see Samarkand’s other jewels, Bibi-Khanim Mosque, Gur-Emir Mausoleum and The Oriental Bazaar Siab and, a personal favourite, the Shah-I-Zinda complex where the most beautiful ceramic tiles can be seen. Shah-I-Zinda has been described as “perhaps the most stunning sight in a city of superlatives”. Wherever possible we will walk between sights.
Free time in the afternoon.
**Day Four: Samarkand to Bukhara**
Early breakfast in our hotel before boarding the high speed train to Bukhara where we will arrive before noon.
Our minibus will pick us up at the train station and take us to two sights on the outskirts of Bukhara:
The Emir’s Summer Palace - this collection of dwellings and staterooms was built by the Russians in 1911 for the last Emir of Bukhara to get him out of the Ark Fortress in the centre of Bukhara.
Bakhauddin Nakhshbandi Ensemble - Bukhara’s holiest place of shrines, stories and superstition and the burial place of one of its holiest saints Baha-al-din (1318-1389)
Check into hotel and lunch at one of Bukhara’s many cafes or the chaikhana beside Lyab-i-Hauz’s 16th century pool. Bukhara is very easy to navigate and a great city for shopping. You can explore its beautiful streets including the Jewish quarter and its synagogue.
**Day Five : Bukhara**
Breakfast in our hotel followed by a half day sightseeing tour (mainly on foot) of this beautiful Silk Road city where most of the highlights are located in the old town. The tour will include The Ark Citadel, the perfectly preserved 1000 year old Samanoi Mausoleum which was discovered under sand in 1934 and Zindan Prison where British Captain Stuart Conolly and Colonel Charles Stoddard were held in the infamous Bug Pit. We will also visit the five vaulted and domed Bukhara Bazaars and the Poi-Kalon Ensemble (12-14 century) with its towering Kalon Minaret which was spared by Ghengis Khan when he razed the city in 1219.
Free time in the afternoon. The bazaars are easy to reach on foot and it is easy to explore Bukhara’s many charms.
**Day Six: Bukhara - Khiva**
Breakfast at the hotel and a chance to have a morning stroll through Bukhara before boarding the train (if available) or coach to Khiva.
Khiva has the status of a museum city and indeed this walled city is like an open-air museum, lost in time. Parts of the wall are thought to date from the fifth century and stepping through one of its gates is like stepping into a different era.
Evening arrival in Khiva and check-in to hotel. Dinner at leisure and the chance to wander the beautiful streets of Khiva at night when the moonlit silhouettes of columns and madrassas from twisting alleyways are at their most captivating. We will book a restaurant in advance for those who would like to join the group for dinner.
**Day Seven: Khiva**
Breakfast at the hotel.
10am - 1pm - Walking tour of Khiva’s Ichan Kala (inner walled city) including:
Kunya Ark (12c) - Khiva rulers’ own fortress and residence including the harem, mint, stables, arsenal, barracks and mosque.
Kalta Minor Minaret - the unfinished, fat turquoise-tiled minaret
Free time for lunch, shopping or walking the walls of Khiva.
**Day Eight: Khiva**
Breakfast at the hotel.
10am - Walking tour of Khiva including:
Juma Mosque - 218 wooden columns - each different and some from the tenth century - support the roof of this interesting mosque.
Tosh-hovli Palace - this palace contains Khiva’s most sumptuous interior decorations including ceramic tiles and carved stone and wood.
Allakuli Khan Bazaar & Caravanserai - a domed market arcade still catering to traders and opening onto Dekhon Bazaar.
Afternoon at leisure
**Day Nine: Nukus**
Nukus is in the semi-autonomous province of Karakalpakstan and is home to the Savitsky Collection which is the second largest collection of Russian avant-garde art in the world
Early breakfast followed by coach to Nukus via the Kyzylkum Desert with visits to Toprak-Kala - the ruins of an ancient city of 2500 where Khorezmian kings lived from 2nd to 6th centuries - and the ruins of the feudal fortress of Ayaz-Kala.
Visit to Savitskiy State Museum of Arts of the Republic of Karakalpakstan followed by dinner near the airport.
Flights to Tashkent and transfers to hotel.
**Day Ten: Tashkent -** Breakfast at hotel followed by departures
**Price: GBP£2187 double occupancy. Single supplement GBP£385**
**International flights not included.**
**Deposit £500 (Non refundable after 3 days). Please RSVP and send email**
**Bring:**
Comfortable walking shoes
Lip balm and moisturiser (it is a very dry climate)
Sun screen
A jacket or sweater - morning and evenings can be cool
Cash - many places do not take credit cards although this is changing. US dollars can be used in some places outside of Tashkent and US dollars, euros and sterling can be easily exchanged at banks. There are some cash machines but they tend to charge a hefty surcharge and give a poor rate.
**Included:**
International arrival/departure transfers
Accommodation in central hotels with breakfast
Experienced local guides throughout the trip

FULL - The Silk Road Cities of Uzbekistan
**Uzbekistan Tour April 10 - 19, 2026 - Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva and Nukus**
Uzbekistan is one of the most architecturally beautiful countries in the world. And three of its cities along the Silk Road, Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva have all been painstakingly restored to their former beauty.
On this tour, you will learn about the history of these magnificent cities from our wonderful local guide who has excellent English and is knowledgeable and proud of his heritage. We will take you on walking tours in the centres of these fascinating cities and by minibus to any monuments and buildings that are further away.
Shop in the incredible bazaars where you can buy beautiful ceramics, scarves, hats, embroidered wall hangings, puppets, ikhat (hand-woven printed cotton or silk) as well as nuts, dried fruits, spices and local vodkas. Shopping in Uzbekistan offers amazing value for money.
You will travel by Uzbekistan’s efficient, fast trains whenever possible. Groups will have a maximum of 12 fellow travellers but you will also have time to explore on your own. These tours are designed for small groups who have the option of joining the the guide and group for meals or doing your own thing whenever you wish.
Jo Weir who has been travelling to Uzbekistan since 1995, will travel with the group and will offer advice on shopping and dining and will talk about the massive changes in the country over the last 30 years. Jo will arrange dinner reservations for those who want to dine with the group.
