**ONLINE** Mindfulness Meditation with Hugh Byrne
**ONLINE** Mindfulness Meditation with Hugh Byrne
**NOW ONLINE** The weekly Sunday morning (10:30 am to 12 noon) class begins with a welcome, short reflection on an aspect of the teachings, and includes an arriving meditation (15 minutes) that will often incorporate poems and may end with a reflection or question. The opening meditation is followed by an invitation to each person to share their name and a few words (for example, what is alive for them right now or what their intention is for the class or the day). The sharing has been a powerful support to help welcome new people, get to know each other, and build community/sangha. Following a brief period of mindful stretching/movement, we finish with a longer meditation (25-30 minutes) and final reflections on the teachings, sharing, Q&A, and announcements. Class participants are welcome to stay and engage with other members of the community or adjourn to a neighboring restaurant or coffee shop. This space is inclusive, everyone is welcome, and we invite you to bring with you all aspects of yourself. Capitol Hill - Not the Usual Tour
We'll walk about 3 miles around Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, visiting preparations for the nation's 250th anniversary, memorials to U.S. leaders, the grotto-like Summer House, the National Botanical Gardens, the Disabled Veterans Memorial, and of course the government buildings where things happen -- or not. The meeting place/start is in front the office building that houses the Sierra Club's DC Chapter, where Potomac Region Outings (PRO) leaders will meet after the hike. **Those planning to attend the potluck lunch and meeting (See separate entry for that meeting) may leave their food, papers and other things in the office.** Sunday parking is available in the area, and the Union Station Metro stop (Red Line) is nearby. Dress for the weather; boots, trekking poles, and survival gear not needed. This guided walk is free, but participants may enjoy the opportunity to donate a modest amount ($2 or so) to defray the costs of training, communications and other elements of the outings program. All hikers, including the leaders, are required to sign the Sierra Club's participation agreement.

Hiking with Sparkles
Let’s enjoy some nature together before it gets too hot! Huntley Meadows offers a nice mostly flat walk through the woods and into a protected marshland with plentiful wildlife including birds, frogs, turtles, and a beaver or two if we’re lucky! It’s gorgeous and really feels like being out in nature although we get to stay in Alexandria :) We will meet at the benches outside the Nature Center (a short walk from the parking lot) at 10am and do a loop into the marshlands. Folks can join for as much or as little walking as desired; it’s only 1-3 miles to explore the park. We can also explore the nature center or picnic a bit before/after our walk as desired. Kids and dogs will love this one so bring the family :)

This coming Sunday promises to be like early summer, so dress accordingly and don't forget to bring bug spray and sunscreen. Starting from the Tenl;eytown Metro Station at noon, we’ll first walk down to the Glover-Archbold trailhead on Van Ness Street and head south along a dirt trail. A short distance later we’ll head up the Soapstone Trail to Connecticut Avenue, which we'll take southward to our ending point at the Van Ness Metro. Old Rag Day Hike 5-17-26
Old Rag Day Hike 5-17-26
Old Rag is easily one of the best hikes on the east coast and definitely one of my favorite day hikes near DC. This trail has everything — rock scrambles, switchbacks, challenging climbs, false summits, and some of the most rewarding views in Shenandoah National Park. If you’ve never done Old Rag before, this is the perfect chance. We’ll be hiking the full Old Rag loop on Sunday, May 17. Expect a strenuous but super fun day outdoors with great people and incredible scenery. After the hike, we can stop for food/drinks nearby before heading back. We’ll meet at Balaton Metro Station at 9:00 AM and carpool to the trailhead. Drive time is around 1 hour 45 minutes. If you’re willing to drive, please comment below — carpooling makes the trip easier and more fun for everyone. Trail Facts • Difficulty Level: Strenuous • Length: 9.4 Miles • Duration: 5–6 Hours • Elevation Gain: 2,604 Feet • Permits: I already have the permits reserved — you can Zelle me $2 for your spot • Parking/Meetup: Balaton Metro Station • Dogs: Not Allowed • Trail: Old Rag Mountain Loop Trail Please only RSVP if you are fully committed since permits are limited.
