Hike: Susquehanna State Park, MD
**Park Map / MD Bus**
*$36. Long: 13 mi., 1500 ft. elevation gain. Moderate hike: 9½ mi., 1000 ft. elevation gain.*
Few sights in nature rival the thrill of watching an eagle soar. Hopefully we’ll get several of those thrills today as we visit one of the prime eagle nesting areas on the East Coast.
UPDATE: Due to avian flu, the trail from the Conowingo Dam to Susquehanna State Park is closed. We will make a stop (30 minutes) at the Conowingo Dam Fishermen's Park to observe eagles and other birds and then go to the Deer Creek Picnic Area in Susquehanna State Park to start the hike. We’ll follow the Deer Creek Trail to the Farm Road Trail and then take the Rock Run and Historic trails to the Rock Run Mill. Long hikers add a loop on the Ivy Branch Trail. All hikers return on the Susquehanna Ridge Trail.

RESERVATIONS
Capital Hiking Club is a non-profit group, and the public is invited on all trips. Reservations are accepted as late as Friday, but reserving before Wednesday night helps ensure your spot and prevent cancellation of the hike due to low sign-ups. RSVP through Meetup and pay through PayPal. Please be sure your RSVP gives your full name and phone number and where you'll be boarding the bus. We don't want to leave you behind!
Because this is a paid event, we cannot offer a waitlist should the hike fill up. If spots subsequently open up, they will become immediately available to anyone and everyone.

Volunteers Needed for TERRIFIC Kids Bike Giveaway
We will be hosting the City of Rockville's annual TERRIFIC Kids bike distribution. In this program students have completed a list of good deeds to earn a bicycle. Here is information about the program: [www.rockvillemd.gov/321/Terrific-Bicycle-Award](https://www.rockvillemd.gov/321/Terrific-Bicycle-Award)
We need volunteers to help with set-up, helping students select a bike, and break-down. Families will be arriving by appointment between 9:30 am to 1:30 pm. A member of the Mayor and City Council will be presenting the student with a certificate. Then the student will be guided to select the correct-sized bicycle and helmet.
Please let us know which 3-hour shift you can volunteer: 8:30 am to 11:30 am and/or 11:30 am to 2:30 pm. You are welcome, of course, to spend the entire day with us also. Just let us know!

Day Hike - Old Rag (9.4 Miles) + Old Bust Head Brewing Co
**Important** \- I've pre\-purchased day\-use tickets for this hike\. Please only sign up if you are 100% committed
Old Rag is one of my favorite hikes on the east coast. The way up is nothing short of incredible - you will experience switchbacks, scrambles, false summits, interesting trail navigation, and absolutely amazing views. This is *the* iconic day hike in Shenandoah. Don't miss it.
I plan to stop for food/drinks at Old Bust Head Brewing Co on the way back (7134 Farm Station Rd, New Baltimore, VA 20187).
We will meet at Vienna Metro at 9AM and carpool to the trailhead. Drive time is about 1 hour and 45 mins - Please post a comment below if you are willing to drive. Carpooling saves the environment and makes friends.

**Trail Details:**
This hike, although challenging, is one of the most popular and spectacular hikes in Shenandoah National Park. It has been referred to as an “unforgettable” hike by many. Your climb to the peak includes many rocky switchbacks, various false peaks, and several scrambles. The descent, which will be slightly longer than your ascent, is a much more gradual grade that ends with an easy walk down a fire road. Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed on this trail.
This is a challenging hike that will take most of the day. It is highly recommended that you bring plenty of water as well as snacks and electrolytes (i.e. Gatorade). Hiking Old Rag is an adventure that should be on every Virginia hiker’s bucket list.
**DAY USE TICKETS: **There were limited tickets left, so I've pre-purchased 14 day use tickets. You can give me $2 in cash or via Venmo.
**LIABILITY NOTICE:**

**ONLINE** Mindfulness Meditation with Hugh Byrne
**NOW ONLINE**
The weekly Sunday morning (10:30 am to 12 noon) class begins with a welcome, short reflection on an aspect of the teachings, and includes an arriving meditation (15 minutes) that will often incorporate poems and may end with a reflection or question.
The opening meditation is followed by an invitation to each person to share their name and a few words (for example, what is alive for them right now or what their intention is for the class or the day). The sharing has been a powerful support to help welcome new people, get to know each other, and build community/sangha.
Following a brief period of mindful stretching/movement, we finish with a longer meditation (25-30 minutes) and final reflections on the teachings, sharing, Q&A, and announcements. Class participants are welcome to stay and engage with other members of the community or adjourn to a neighboring restaurant or coffee shop.
This space is inclusive, everyone is welcome, and we invite you to bring with you all aspects of yourself.

Capitol Hill - Not the Usual Tour
We'll walk about 3 miles around Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, visiting preparations for the nation's 250th anniversary, memorials to U.S. leaders, the grotto-like Summer House, the National Botanical Gardens, the Disabled Veterans Memorial, and of course the government buildings where things happen -- or not.
The meeting place/start is in front the office building that houses the Sierra Club's DC Chapter, where Potomac Region Outings (PRO) leaders will meet after the hike. **Those planning to attend the potluck lunch and meeting (See separate entry for that meeting) may leave their food, papers and other things in the office.** Sunday parking is available in the area, and the Union Station Metro stop (Red Line) is nearby.
Dress for the weather; boots, trekking poles, and survival gear not needed. This guided walk is free, but participants may enjoy the opportunity to donate a modest amount ($2 or so) to defray the costs of training, communications and other elements of the outings program. All hikers, including the leaders, are required to sign the Sierra Club's participation agreement.
