CURRICULUM

The key to building a successful business is to make sure that you have a sustainable, scalable business model. A good business model is more than a bunch of objectives and strategies; you need to convert those strategies into a financial model and metrics. In this session, Bill Reichert (of Garage Technology Ventures (http://www.garage.com/)) will review the elements of your business model (starting with the Value Proposition as discussed in his first workshop on July 13) and provide a framework for converting them into a financial model and key metrics.

Entrepreneurs will be challenged to articulate their current hypotheses for each element, and then connect the elements in their “Business Model Formula,” the financial model that converts their words into economics.

During the workshop, participants will learn:

• The nine key elements of the Business Model Matrix

• The limitations of the “Business Model Canvas”

• Why most business models are doomed to failure

• How to test, iterate, and validate the business model elements

• How to convert the business model into a financial model

• Questions investors will ask about the business model

By the end of the workshop, participants will have a practical and useful framework that will enable them to develop, test, and validate the business and financial model!

Bill Reichert

Managing Director, Garage Technology Ventures (http://www.garage.com/)

Bill Reichert has over 30 years of experience as an entrepreneur and investor. Since co-founding Garage with Guy Kawasaki in 1998, Bill has focused on early-stage information technology and materials science companies.

As an investor, Bill has been a board director or board observer at CaseStack, WhiteHat Security, ClearFuels Technology, Simply Hired, MiaSole, D.light Design, ThermoCeramix, and VisaNow, among others. Prior to Garage, Bill was a co-founder or senior executive in several venture-backed technology startups, including Trademark Software, The Learning Company, and Academic Systems. Earlier in his career, he worked at McKinsey & Company, Brown Brothers Harriman & Co., and the World Bank.

Bill earned a B.A. at Harvard College and an M.B.A. from Stanford University. He was a founding board member and a Chairman of the Churchill Club. He was also a charter member and a Board Member of the Silicon Valley Association of Startup Entrepreneurs. Currently he is an Advisor to the Women’s Startup Lab in Silicon Valley, and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations in New York.
