Community Cinema attracts many residents of Chinatown, Nob Hill, North Beach and other neighboring districts, as well as college students and young working professionals in the city.

Films shown at Community Cinema range from documentary films about gender, sexuality, war, politics, poetry and arts, to narrative films like rom-com, action thriller and etc.

Since its launch in May 2021, Community Cinema has screened 47 films, and counting! We are grateful to have collaborated with amazing filmmakers like Emmy-Nominated director James Q. Chan, Vietnamese filmmakers Ngoc Le and Tam Ngo and Henry Rosenthal.

    # Bay Area Proud Asian Men: Asian Men's Mental Wellbeing Discussion and Screening

    Ticket Link

Asian men are experiencing a mental health epidemic.
In 2015-2019, Asian men were the least likely to use mental health services compared to any other race and gender combination (SAMHSA, 2021).
In order to combat this, Proud Asian Men was created.
Proud Asian Men is a support group and men's mental health collective hosted under Asian Mental Health Project in collaboration with JinShan Collective whose mission is to create a safe and brave space for Asian men to explore the intersection of their culture and masculinity in a supportive environment.

    About the event:
4-5 PM: Film Screening of Men's Mental Health Work done by Proud Asian Men
5-6 PM: Open Discussion with Leo Xia and Michael Ly
We are currently raising funds to support Proud Asian Men and keep in-person events as accessible as possible. To support us, you can donate here. Make sure to label your donation with "Proud Asian Men" in the description.
Parking: street parking or $8 at St Mary's Parking Garage for 12 hour parking (recommended).
This event is free to attend and open to everyone - spots limited to 60 attendees. If we have reached capacity, please sign up for the waitlist.
DISCLAIMER: This event does not provide professional therapy services. Please seek professional medical and mental health services for treatment needs and advice.
By attending, you are consenting to photos and videos being taken for promotional purposes. If you are uncomfortable with this, please let us know beforehand, and we will honor requests to not have any media taken of them for promo.
    About the organizers:
    ABOUT LEO:
Leo Xia is a Los Angeles-based men’s mental health facilitator and Alt R&B/Lofi performance artist going by the name Lowhi.
He facilitates weekly men's support groups through his own JinShan Collective as well as Proud Asian Men in collaboration with Asian Mental Health Project. In these groups he navigates conversations about masculinity, culture and identity for Asian men. He created these spaces to combat the global male loneliness epidemic and to support men in creating the life that they dream of through emotional intelligence and communication.

    ABOUT MICHAEL:
Michael Ly is passionate about helping people cultivate healthier, more authentic relationships with themselves and others. He is currently the lead for the Bay Area chapter of Proud Asian Men. Guided by non-hierarchical healing and community support, Michael aims to create more spaces where men can practice vulnerability and active listening—reconnecting with their full emotional potential and challenging patriarchal norms.
    ABOUT CLARION:

Clarion Performing Arts Center provides education and live performance opportunities by fusing music, poetry, theater and visual art as one organic artistic experience. Its program aims to inspire and empower youth, seniors and the underserved immigrant community in San Francisco Chinatown, transform society's view on Asian Americans, and provide a safe and sacred space for addressing current social issues that impact the Asian community.

    About
We’re excited to present the film, From the Ground Up. The film follows artist, Leon Sun, Barnali Ghosh and Anirvan Chatterjee of Berkeley South Asian Radical History Walking Tour, and Caroline Cabading of Manilatown Heritage Foundation as they explore the intersections of Asian American community art, history, and archival work in the San Francisco Bay Area. The film is 35 minutes.
Following the screening, researcher Grant Din will share insights from his work in historical preservation and genealogical research. We welcome you to bring your questions and join the conversation about how to get involved in preserving your own family and community history.
We’re offering this event on a sliding scale. Contributions help sustain the film and future screenings, and no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
