In the documentary Fish Out of Water, director Ky Dickens explores nine Bible passages that have become notorious for being used to condemn homosexuality and justify discrimination.
Using a hand-drawn narrator, animated takes on biblical stories, and witty illustrations, Fish Out of Water makes a controversial subject approachable and easy to understand.
The film begins with an animated retelling of a shocking experience Dickens had at Vanderbilt University after coming out to her sorority sisters. Their harsh condemnation was based on passages from the Bible. Traveling across America and listening to passionate opinions on this divisive issue, Ky speaks with clergy from different faiths, documenting the stories of those who have faced oppression as well as the arguments used by those who justify it.
Covering more than twenty states and capturing the devastation felt by the LGBTQ+ community in the immediate aftermath of the 2008 vote on Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage in California, Fish Out of Water uses care and humor to show just how important this long-standing issue remains.
