Who says volunteering is all work and no play? Get outside, get on the water, and get connected for a day on the Matanzas River where the mission is simple: fresh air, good company, and an opportunity to help clean the river.

The Litter Gitter, run by Matanzas Riverkeeper, is a program that takes members of the community out on the Matanzas River to remove trash from the waterway.

The Litter Gitter is a bright yellow 24-foot Carolina skiff.
The river is flanked by salt marshes, mangroves, oyster bars, and barrier island habitat; we might spot dolphins, manatees, wading birds, and sea turtles along the way.

This outing is limited to 7 plus outing leader. No guests.

Information from Captain Silas Tanner:

  • We recommend sun protection including a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
  • Please bring a reusable water bottle (no single-use plastic or styrofoam).
  • All volunteers are required to wear closed-toe, protective footwear (waterproof boots are recommended). No sandals or flip flops.
  • Be sure to wear clothing you don't mind getting wet and muddy.
  • The Litter Gitter II will provide all the tools and equipment necessary to collect debris.

Please sign up if you are committed to attending this event and notify the outing leader of any cancellations as soon as possible.

After all our hard work, we will enjoy lunch together nearby. Details to follow!

Cancellation Policy: Event will be held rain or shine but may be cancelled if weather threatens safety such as in the case of lightning or high winds in the forecast. Also, if the heat index is forecast to be over 103, then the outing will be cancelled.

Participants are advised to check Meetup for current status before traveling to the event. Events may need to be cancelled at short notice.

* Help the environment by following these tips: Bring your water in a reusable container instead of a single-use plastic bottle. Use sunscreen free oxybenzone and oxtinoxate. These chemicals are extremely harmful to coral reefs, as well as being hormone disruptors in humans.

Sierra Club maintains a safe space agreement between participants, leaders, volunteers, and staff. They want to support everyone and exploring, enjoying, and protecting our natural environment, and hateful and dangerous behavior will not be tolerated. We don't want to deny participation in these outdoor programs, and we will always say no to racism, sexism, ageism, homophobia, impairment, and disruption.

We request that all participants cooperate with the outings leaders direction to ensure a safe and enjoyable outing for everyone.
