Step into a quiet tatami space and experience a refined moment of Japanese culture. Calligraphy, tea, and seasonal sweets. A small and intimate workshop where you can experience three elements of Japanese culture in one setting. ⸻ Calligraphy Japanese calligraphy (Shodō) is a traditional art where creativity and mindfulness come together. Guided by calligraphy artist Ranka, you will explore the structure of strokes, the role of breath, and the balance between body and mind. At the end of the session, you will create the character “卯”, a symbol of April (Uzuki), and take home a memory of spring and this experience. ⸻ Japanese Tea Pairing We will serve a selection of premium Japanese teas, including ceremonial-grade matcha and gyokuro. Maki-e is a traditional Japanese lacquer decoration technique. Techiniques are involved drawing pictures, patterns, and letters on the surface of lacquerware using lacquer, and then sprinkling and fixing metal powder, such as gold or silver, onto the surface. In our workshop, you have the opportunity to create maki-e designs using traditional Japanese patterns (wagara) or your own original designs. Then your canvas can be a glass cup or a glass picture frame.
