[New Message to members 11/04/2024:

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am sorry we have not had a talk during the first few months of 2024. However, I am planning to give a talk during the middle of May in central Athens. The date, time and venue will be sent out to Meetup members in the first week or so of May.

I can tell you this talk will be about Plato's book Phaedrus (‘In praise of Love’) - but will focus more on the metaphysical aspects of the book rather than my previous talk on this Platonic dialogue.

In the meantime, enjoy the beautiful springtime in Athens.

Warm Regards,

James. ]

Who We Are

We are an informal group that 'usually' meets together in Athens – although we occasionally have ‘online’ talks as well so people from outside Athens/Greece can join us if they want. Although the meetup group now has a large ‘membership’ (1000+ members), for any particular talk in Athens the usual audience is 8 to 15 people of all ages.

Note: Regular short programs of talks (and walks) will be offered in central Athens and Delphi at various times of the year. These talks are currently offered in English. (For short periods the location of this group may 'appear' to move around a little e.g. Delphi This is simply to temporarily assist the Google search visibility for a talk which is not in Athens.)

What This Philosophy Meetup Group is About

We will investigate some of the fundamental ideas of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle in order to help us all make better and more informed LIFE CHOICES today. The group maintains that philosophy should be regarded for the most part as a 'practical' pursuit related to how we live our lives, and not just an intellectual or academic subject which only discusses abstract or abstruse ideas. Philosophical discussion and contemplation should be seen as a prelude to making positive decisions in our personal lives - and the lives of the communities and cities we live in.

Cost / Details

In keeping with the Socratic tradition, talks are usually offered free of charge for people who come along. Talks usually last about 45 minutes with time for questions and discussion afterwards.

No previous formal or academic study of philosophy is needed to come along and enjoy the talks: everyone over 18 years old is welcome. (At the same time, more experienced philosophers are of course also welcome.)

Talks are usually held at informal bar-restaurant venues, or at inspiring locations. Come and see how it is - there is no ‘signing up’ or membership stuff. This meetup.com 'group' is simply a way of letting people know when a talk has been arranged - and what it is about - so people can attend the talk if they wish.

Some Extra Admin Information for Members / Attendees:

CANCELLATIONS ON MEETUP - REQUEST TO MEMBERS: If you 'click' on Meetup to say you are coming to a talk (RSVP) - but then change your mind - "no problem" - but please remember to cancel your place on Meetup or let James know. For several administrative reasons, it is very useful to have a 'rough idea' how many people are coming on any particular night. (E.g. a rough idea of how many tables to hold/reserve in a bar/restaurant area for the talk is very useful - so as not to hold several tables for just a few people - or vice versa.)
