Sobre nosotros
Civilized Conversation seeks to revive the lost art of face-to-face thoughtful conversation. We're a diverse group of people from different parts of the political spectrum and varying backgrounds. Yet, we believe that it is possible to discuss controversial topics honestly and respectfully, as well as passionately.
We meet every Monday evening (except the last Monday of each month) at the same time and place to discuss a pre-set topic. Usually it's related to politics or public affairs, but some topics are about religion, cultural change history, world politics, or even philosophy or science. Our format is an informal roundtable discussion by all present, with a moderator.
WHEN: Mondays 7pm - 9pm (except last Monday of each month).
WHERE: Panera Cafe, 5620 Balboa Ave., at the front of the giant shopping mall at Balboa and Genesee. Lots of free parking.
SIGN UP to the group and to attend specific mtgs at Meet-up.com.

The frontiers of digital privacy invasion and protection.
Panera Bread, 5620 Balboa Avenue, San Diego, CA, USThis one is personal, in two senses. First. it's about how can a person find protection from the rapidly evolving on-line threats to personal privacy? Could bigger and more powerful actors do anything to help us (like the social media platforms or the government), instead of either monetizing our loss of privacy or focusing on…whatever it is our regulatory agencies and elected officials focus on these days?
Beats me. Luckily, our meeting is personal in a second way. We have a guest speaker. Scott.
Scott has been to CivCon many times and to other Meetup groups of mine. He knows a LOT about the digital privacy realm, so I asked him to come here and talk about it. Hopefully, some other group members know a bit about this topic, too.
Scott will lead our discussion. It might get into things like privacy tools that are easily available if one just turns the functions on, social media vulnerabilities, how to safeguard your money, AI issues, and (if he doesn't, I will broach) our vast and metastasizing corporate and govt surveillance state.
Check back here the week before the mtg for some (hopefully) useful readings on the nature of the threats and whether/how to protect oneself.
Optional Backgrounders –
· Not DavidG’s strength, this topic. Maybe Scott can recommend good readings or tips/tricks lists. My ideas for readings:
· How to protect your privacy, on- and off-line. U.S. Cybersecurity Magazine. A similar list, but from 2016. ACLU.
· More broadly, privacy protection is a vast field. See this list of privacy topics, from the advocacy group Electronic Frontiers Foundation.
· EFF’s surveillance self-defense guides. Tips, tools, and how-to. Note especially EFF’s The Basics, about strong passwords, data encryption, texting security, etc.16 asistentes
