We are looking for people who are interested in learning about the restoration, renovation, and programming of the Lowell Mason House Music Center, the 1792 birthplace of Lowell Mason in Medfield, Massachusetts. Music educators, church musicians, and fans of American/New England history and historic preservation from around the country should consider joining as well as anyone in the local Medfield and or Greater Boston communities who will directly benefit from the programming opportunities that are created. Those who would like to help with the physical restoration and/or maintenance of the house, support the fund-raising initiatives, and those who would be like to act as docents or guides for the house, are encouraged to join as well.
Lowell Mason (1792-1872) is best known as the founder of American school music education. His work as a pioneer music educator, first at the Boston Academy of Music which he co-founded in 1833 with George James Webb and soon after in the Boston public schools, where he taught for over twenty years, is one of his greatest historical legacies. He also also known as a pioneer composer of American sacred music as he wrote, arranged, and published many hymns and sacred music collections. The Lowell Mason House was founded in October of 2010 when a group of concerned Medfield citizens and music educators from around the country came together with the desire to preserve the house and legacy of Lowell Mason the Father of Music Education in America. Within months we generated enough support and organized to secure a new location for the house and move it before demolition by a local developer to town owned land next to Hinckley Pond.
The Mission of the Lowell Mason House is to create and program an active space for music making, music and arts education advocacy and historical preservation within the original structure of the Lowell Mason birthplace.
The Lowell Mason House will be a major cultural hub. It will serve as a museum honoring Lowell Mason, while advocating for the importance of music education, and offer a diverse selection of music instruction and performance in facilities that encourage artistic expression and strengthen the value of the arts in the community.
