This meetup is for those interested in learning about Democratic Socialism, and forming an advocacy group for the DSA within the local Democratic Party political establishment through participation in meetings, popular education, public service activities, and ongoing study of principles, history and practice of democratic socialism.
Tidewater DSA is an official chapter of the national DSA organization. Tidewater DSA includes the mid and lower Peninsulas areas of Williamsburg, Yorktown, Newport News and Hampton, as well as the south Hampton Roads cities of Norfolk, Suffolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake and Virginia Beach. This group is the home of Tidewater DSA on Meetup.com. It is focused primarily on education, welcoming new members and action planning for south Hampton Roads. Most meetup locations will be in Norfolk or Virginia Beach.
The first activities will focus on forming a consistent study group, and covering the study materials available from the DSA.
Secondly, we shall discuss our own personal political priorities, and particular policies we most support, individually and collectively. This will culminate in forming a loose, local priority agenda.
Thirdly, we will determine a set of peaceful, legal, and nonviolent actions we will take to advance this agenda, including local community organizing, and participating as a bloc in the local Democratic Party. We may finally choose to (or not) to form a local branch of the DSA, etc. The group will decide its own course and agenda within this general framework (naturally).
