Migration time!
Joomla 2.5 is scheduled for end-of-life on December 31, 2014. This means we need to migrate Joomla 2.5 sites to Joomla 3 by then (or at least that's the perfect world scenario).
In this workshop, we will work with our site at joomlabayarea.com as an example site to migrate from Joomla 2.5 to Joomla 3. We want to go over many more migration examples as well. Attendees can have a development copy of one of their 2.5 sites set up and we can help guide through those migrations too. We won't have time to do super huge sites - so pick a reasonable site with a few third-party extensions and an off-the-shelf template. This is not a prerequisite and you don't have to have a site to migrate for participation in this workshop.
Lunch will be provided along with drinks. All of this is included with the cost. We will not have food in the morning, only coffee and water, so grab something before you arrive. Or there is a cafe in the Museum where you can grab a bite.
Tentative Schedule for this workshop:
9:00-9:30 Registration and Setup
9:30-10:00 Arrive, coffee, get settled
10:30-11:00 Announcements, Joomla Roadmap discussion:
This segment will be announcements, discussion about the points of the Joomla Roadmap as it pertains to migrations and the technical specifications for Joomla 3 to lead into the next segment.
11:00-11:30 Planning and Migration Process Outline:
Planning can easily take more than a half hour. In this segment we will go over questions to ask yourself as you plan for migration and what the two processes to migrate from 2.5 to 3 are. This includes technical specifications for Joomla 3, hosting, content and how it relates to responsive design, how to prep the 2.5 site, redesigns, clean-up, goals, and more.
11:30-12:00 Templates:
This segment will address templates and how to handle them for migration from 2.5 to 3. We will only be discussing off-the-shelf third-party templates. We will not be discussing custom templates at this workshop. Learn the things to look for when changing templates and setting the expectation with the client.
12:00-1:30 Lunch
We will have a catered lunch and then explore the incredible Computer History Museum. The museum is a fun, informative and inspiring place to be! You will have time to see the things that interest you most, or just stroll through and see the exhibits at your own pace.
1:30-2:15 Third-party extensions:
Third-party extensions have numerous ways they need to be migrated. Learn the three main processes that most third-party extensions fall into for migration and how to handle them. We will be looking at several extensions to see what to do about them during this segment (for joomlabayarea.com and for the attendee sites).
15 minute break
2:30-4:30 Migrations and troubleshooting:
This is the segment that we do the migrations. No matter how many white screens we get, we will go through it and work with it. If time permits, we'll get to some system clean up after the migrations.
We will be meeting in the Boole Room at the Computer History Museum.
Parking is easy and free in the Computer History Museum Parking lot. We will send attendees more info about parking prior to the event. Do you or someone you know need financial help to attend this workshop? We will have some scholarships available.
