About the day
Berkshire is a royal county due to the location of Windsor Castle. It got its name back in the 9th century from 'Bearroc' in old English, which means 'a wood of box trees'. It has been the scene of notable battles in the 10th century and later in the English Civil War in the 17th century. We will be visiting:

Littlecote Roman Villa is an extensive and exceptional villa discovered in the 18th century. The villa was initially built in about 60AD near the site of a Roman guard post covering a crossing of the River Kennet. It was rebuilt and enlarged over the next two centuries, in its heyday it boasted 60 rooms, two thermal baths and a number of mosaic floors and hypocausts. Alot of the mosaic floors are still visable today.Wargrave
The pretty village of Wargrave (derived from 'Weir-Grove') is primarily on the River Thames but also along the confluence of the River Loddon. It has an historic centre, originating in the Tudor period with many listed buildings and two marinas.Cookham
The village of Cookham sits on the River Thames with a history that goes back thousands of years. It has a 12th century church and plenty of 17th & 18th century buildings. It was the home of the famous British painter Sir Stanley Spencer, who called Cookham "a village in heaven".Coach seating

About the foreshore
I will be your guide as we will be going down to the Thames foreshore at low tide and walking along the foreshore, where we will have about 1h 30mins to have a look around for objects before the tide comes in. Most objects you can spot sitting on the foreshore after being washed in on the tide (its eyes only, we are not allowed to dig or scrape the foreshore surface).
You will find everything from bits of pottery, clay pipes, bottles, animal bones to ship items. Most of the things we find are from the Medieval to the Victorian period or you might be lucky and find something Roman or older.

- Day trip by train - to historic St. Albans!St. Pancras Train Station (outside the National Rail Ticket Office), London
Come along on Saturday 24th May to visit the historic city of St. Albans!
About St. Albans
St. Albans sits 22 miles north of London along the old Roman road of Watling Street. The Romans named it Verulamium. It was the second-largest town in Roman Britain and one of the most important. It was later destroyed in the Iceni revolt led by Boudica in AD 60/61 (along with London & the then capital Colchester) and rebuilt after. In medieval times, the town grew up on the hill to the east of the former Roman settlement around the Benedictine foundation of St. Albans Abbey. The abbey church was built where Alban (later St. Alban) was executed by the Romans in the 4th century. Alban, became the first British Christian martyr.
Today, the 'Cathedral and Abbey Church of St. Alban' is 84 metres (276 ft) long, with much of its present architecture dating from Norman times, it became a cathedral in 1877 and is the second longest cathedral in the United Kingdom (after Winchester).
Basically St. Albans is three cities in one, the Roman one in the park, the medieval one around the abbey and the modern one around the train station.
