Are you sick of superheroes and Jedis? Have you gone cross-eyed from too much CGI? Do you have difficulty remembering or caring what number the Fast and Furious franchise is on? Then come with me, because we’re going back. Back to a time of hard drinking detectives and double crossing dames. A time of quick one liners and million dollar explosions.
If you enjoy the look, feel and sound of films from the past, this group is for you. Between HOME, Vue Printworks, Everyman Cinema and Cultplex (formerly Chapeltown Picture House), a wide range of films are regularly available, from classic noirs of the 40s, gory horrors from the 80s, and sharp thrillers of the 90s.
The plan is simple. We meet up, grab a drink and then watch a movie. If we are feeling adventurous, we can even talk to each other too. So sign up, come along and watch an old favourite on the big screen.
Please note this group is for screenings of old films. For new releases, there is The Manchester Film Fans Meetup Group.
All start times stated on events are for the actual film, not the meetup time.
Feel free to join the WhatsApp group here. I will only be using it to post our location pre-film as the Meetup app isn't great with notifications.
If you are unable to attend an event, please be sure to change your RSVP so I know how many people to expect and can keep a lookout for latecomers. Multiple no-shows without changing your RSVP will result in you being removed from the group.

The sole survivor of a pier shoot-out tells the story of how a notorious criminal influenced the events that began with five criminals meeting in a seemingly random police lineup.
Event time is for the actual film. We'll meet at the Hard Rock Cafe. I'll be there grabbing a drink about 30-40 minutes before the film so feel free to join me.
Tickets available here. I suggest buying in advance as they can sell out. I am in seat E6.

- The Big Heat (1953) @ HOME CinemaHOME Theatre Manchester, Manchester
Police Sergeant Bannion is investigating the apparent suicide of a corrupt cop, but is suddenly ordered to stop the investigation. Driven to unravel the mystery, Bannion continues probing until his professional persistence has disastrous personal consequences.
As the conspiracy closes in around him, Bannion finds himself trapped in a deadly game with an underworld kingpin, his cold-blooded henchman and a mysterious woman.
Muscular filmmaking from Fritz Lang and memorable turns from Lee Marvin and Gloria Grahame as a violent gangster and a femme fatale moll make The Big Heat a brutal, brilliant film noir.
Event time is for the actual film. As usual, I'll be at the HOME bar grabbing a drink about 30-40 minutes before the film so feel free to join me.
Tickets available here. I suggest buying in advance as they can sell out. I am in seat H12.

- In a Lonely Place (1950) @ HOME CinemaHOME Theatre Manchester, Manchester
Dixon Steele, a moody, volatile Hollywood screenwriter who's had his heyday, is accused of murdering a coat check girl from a showbiz restaurant after inviting her home. Laurel Gray, an actress who lives in Dixon's apartment complex, provides an alibi for her neighbour when questioned by the police, and the pair start a relationship.
But the chief of police is unconvinced of Dixon’s innocence and, after learning of his violent past, Laurel begins to question if she is putting herself in danger by staying with him.
Quietly thrilling, pointedly melancholic and boasting some of the finest performances in Humphrey Bogart and Gloria Grahame’s careers, In a Lonely Place is a masterpiece of film noir – and a perfect illustration of the darkness at the heart of post-war Hollywood.
Event time is for the actual film. As usual, I'll be at the HOME bar grabbing a drink about 30-40 minutes before the film so feel free to join me.
