Speaker: John Votta (Union ai) | Sage Elliott (Union ai)
Abstract: There’s no question that AI-powered agents are here to stay in modern technical workflows. But agents present unique challenges that “traditional” AI and ML don’t have, especially when it comes to being fault-tolerant. Because agents rely on stateful execution, error recovery is more complicated, as restarting agentic workflows can be expensive and time-consuming. Additionally, because agents operate continuously, deploying updates can be tricky and risk breaking active workflows. And when things do go wrong, debugging agents in production can be a nightmare because logs are scattered across myriad vendors, with no unified timeline nor trace. The solution is orchestration: fault-tolerant orchestration that not only handles errors, but expects them, and is designed accordingly to minimize disruption. This session will discuss three key principles of reliable orchestration in an agentic AI world, with real examples of how these principles have been implemented in the upcoming Flyte 2.0 open source release. The three principles are: 1) automatic caching for intermediate workflow results; 2) versioned deployments for updates; and 3) comprehensive tracing and high-level observability for easily discoverable failures and logs.
