Trans America Trail (TAT) - Eastern Portion
Animé par Chicagoland Dual-Sport Riders (CDSR)
Détails
So I thought I would give the TAT a go this Spring. Will be starting in Virginia and I am going to finish up in Adair, OK (Section 20 of the TAT) where it crosses I-44 then head Northeast on the highway thru St. Louis and back to Chi-Town.
If there are people interested, my plan is to meet up at the Eggleston Springs Campground in Eggleston, VA which is just east of the NY Spur of TAT and then meets up with the main trail a little SW of there. Here is the URL for the campground:

There are GPS files and maps of TAT available on a few sites. This one allows you to download maps and gpx files for free:

There is also some great notes and description of each segment of the trail. I plan on camping. First time doing this on a motorcycle for me. But will be eating at restaurants on the way instead of packing all the cooking stuff. Should be a great trip. I expect to be at the campground on Saturday afternoon April 22nd and hope to reach Adair in 7 days (Saturday the 29th) be back in Chicago by Sunday or Monday.
I will be taking my BMW f800GS. From what I understand the eastern part is big bike friendling but I also see a ton of dual sports in YouTube videos. Not sure about riding a dual sport from here to the east coast but I guess some do.

The Trans America Trail (TAT) is a transcontinental, coast to coast route across the United States. It is designed for Dual Sport and Adventure Bike motorcycles. It consists mostly of dirt roads, logging roads, fire roads, farm roads, unimproved roads and back paved roads. The route attempts to avoid pavement but it travels into towns for gasoline stops and in the eastern and western states near the oceans, the route is mostly paved.
This will be a three week (21 riding days) adventure. The riding days start early and are long. This is a tough ride, not so much that the riding is challenging but rather it is like a marathon. Day after day you and your bike need to perform flawlessly. Each morning you will start early and ride for most of the day. The ride is 4,923 miles, averaging 234 miles per day (8 hours of riding). In the evening you will need to maintain your bike and prep it for the next day. Repairs and flats are fixed by you on the trail. The ride is limited to 24 riders. You will break into small group of 4 or less riders of your own choosing. Ride groups can change each day. Riders of similar riding ability and interest tend to group together. Come with the Team attitude. If you want to ride alone then don't join this ride.
