Hi Friends and Welcome to East Midlands Data
We're a community run Microsoft focused data user group. We provide free training, socialising, networking, recruitment, geeky debate and more on a wide range of data technology topics to anyone who wants to come along to our meetings.
Our in-person events run on the second Wednesday of every month.
To cover as much of the East Midlands as possible we currently alternate locations between Nottingham and Derby.

The DAX Speed Blueprint: Locate, Understand, Accelerate
Slow performing Power BI reports and visuals are a major cause of frustration. Finding the cause of these slow-downs and understanding why they are happening are the first steps in resolving them.
In this session we'll discuss the troubleshooting steps for slow DAX executions, using tools like Performance Analyser and DAX Studio.
We'll cover the different purposes behind the two parts of the DAX engine - Storage and Formula, and how to write expressions that target each individual component, allowing us to utilise their combined power to unlock the full potential of DAX.
We'll see how optimising expressions in order to harness the power of these engines helps increase performance. This will be done using live demonstrations showing the actual difference in executions times as well as exploring query plans.
By the end of this session, you will know how to identify which DAX expressions are causing issues in your reports, you'll have a solid understanding of what the DAX engine consists of, how the parts work together and how to use them to your advantage to make your expressions faster and more efficient. You will also know how to view a DAX query plan to help troubleshoot slow performing queries.

When the Firehose causes the BurnoutBurnout is complex, and as it is unique to every person, it can be difficult to define and identify. Let me help you with that.
Over the past few years burnout has become commonly mentioned in conversations about work life balance, about work from home, about hybrid working, about returning to the office.
As is often the case when a newer issue becomes a commonly used buzzword, it's true definition and potential causes have become watered down. Even the description of the recognized symptoms, prevention and treatments has become diluted. The realities of dealing with burnout, both in the workplace and in our personal lives, have been lost in the smoke.
In this session we will be reminded of what burnout actually looks like, how it is correctly defined, and how we can avoid some of the triggers.
I will share my professional experiences with a variety of different symptoms and issues and introduce you to some of the approaches that I encourage people to use.You will leave this session having added tools to your toolbox that are relatively straightforward, hopefully memorable, and generic enough that they will apply to the majority of us.
