The Women in Machine Learning & Data Science (WiML&DS) Meetup aims to inspire and educate, regardless of gender, and support women in the field.

19:25 – “Human Body Extraction from Images” by Gül Varol, PhD Student @INRIA (Willow Team)

Abstract: Human shape estimation is an important, but challenging task for video editing, animation and fashion industry. To address this problem, we generate synthetic images of people, the SURREAL dataset, to serve as training data. Then, we propose the BodyNet framework that infers 2D body part segmentation, 2D/3D pose estimation, and volumetric shape prediction in a multi-task neural network architecture. Our results and the dataset open up new possibilities for advancing person analysis using cheap and large-scale synthetic data.

19:45 – “Dataviz 101: Data is beautiful, please don't ruin it" by Anne-Marie Tousch, Senior Research Scientist @CriteoAILab

Abstract : Why is it suboptimal to visualize data as plain figures? What is the purpose of data visualization? Why should you care? What is the interplay between statistics, data analysis, and a good marketing story? In this talk, I'll give some answers and try to convince you to adopt best practices in dataviz.

20:10 – Salary negotiation workshop by Natalie Cernecka

Abstract. Today, only 7% of women negotiate their first salary, compared to 57% of men. This gap narrows later in career, yet, there is always 15% less women than men who negotiate at every stage. It’s time we change this and start negotiating our salaries, fees, and benefits. This workshop will give you basic principles, tools, and tips, so that you approach your next big negotiation in full confidence. Instead of waiting 200 years for gender wage gap to close, let’s learn to negotiate now!
