Depuis son enfance dans les bidonvilles de Mumbai, Jamal Malik poursuit son rêve : retrouver Latika, une jeune orpheline dont il est amoureux. Il atteint la question finale à 20 millions de roupies mais il est arrêté par la police, qui le soupçonne de tricherie.
