24th Fribourg Linux Seminar : Kubernetes and Friends

Détails

Join us at the 24th Fribourg Linux Seminar, where we explore the latest developments in container orchestration, cloud-native architecture, and the tools and technologies that are making it all possible.

Our expert speakers will share their insights and experiences, offering practical advice and best practices for running scalable and resilient applications in today's fast-paced, cloud-driven world.

Don't miss this opportunity to network with fellow developers and DevOps professionals, and learn from the best in the business.

Agenda

- 16h45 : Reception of Attendees

- 17h00 : Welcome (Jacques Supcik Professor HEIA-FR, Luca Haab HEIA-FR)

- 17h05 : Deploy to Kubernetes - The Cool Kids' Guide (derlin (Lucy Linder) - Software Engineer 🐙, Divio AG)

Let's embark on a journey where we cover all the essential building blocks you need to bring your applications to the cloud. We'll talk about Kubernetes 101, manifests, the powerful Helm packaging system, helmfile, and more. By the end of the talk, you'll have a good understanding of the different technologies to package, deploy, and manage your dockerized applications on Kubernetes with style.

- 17h40 : Karpenter, just-in-time nodes provisioning for any Kubernetes cluster (Samuel Riedo and Patrick Madec - Solutions Architects at Amazon Web Services (AWS))

Karpenter is a powerful open-source project developed by Amazon Web Services (AWS) that provides a Kubernetes-native approach to manage and scale compute resources, such as virtual machines and containers. Karpenter is designed to work with any Kubernetes cluster, on-prem or in the cloud, and is not limited to AWS.
The goal of Karpenter is to simplify the management of resources for Kubernetes users by automating the provisioning, scaling, and optimization of nodes. By leveraging Kubernetes' declarative API model and controller framework, Karpenter provides an intuitive interface for deploying and managing nodes on any Kubernetes cluster without the need for deep knowledge of the underlying cloud infrastructure.
One of the key benefits of Karpenter is its intelligent resource allocation and auto-scaling capabilities allowing optimal resource utilization and cost-effectiveness as it can intelligently allocate resources based on application needs.
Karpenter is designed to be extensible and customizable, with support for multiple cloud providers (incl. AWS). This flexibility allows organizations to adopt Karpenter as a common tool for managing resources across cloud environments, providing consistency and reducing complexity.

- 18h15 : So let's focus on Kubernetes friends (Fabrice Carrel - IT and DevOps Solutions Architect at CISEL)

There is no need to present the benefits offered by the Kubernetes orchestrator anymore. So let's take a moment to talk about its "friends"!
The idea of this presentation is to take a step back and take a look at the elements that gravitate around Kubernetes and that bring it indispensable added value.
The focus will be on those technical and methodological tools that enable the implementation of high quality production systems.
The sectors covered by these tools include security, observability, automation, disaster recovery and *Ops methodologies.
We will draw on our experience as a Kubernetes Certified Service Provider (KCSP) to propose appropriate tools or methodologies depending on the needs and situations.
As an auditor you will get an overview of the possibilities offered by the huge pool of projects that can be integrated with Kubernetes.

- 18h55 : Information HEIA-FR (Roland Scherwey, Professor HEIA-FR)
- 19h05 : Aperitive and Networking
