🇺🇸✨ English Conversation & American Culture – Class 1: American Work Habits 💼
Looking to improve your English speaking skills while learning more about American culture? 🌎 This class is designed for intermediate English learners (B1–B2) who want to practice real conversation and explore cultural topics in a fun, respectful, and meaningful way.
This is the trial class of a 4-part series. Each class is 1.5 hours with pair and group conversations, cultural themes, short readings or videos, and vocabulary/feedback to help you sound more natural. At the end of every class, you’ll receive recap notes with the main ideas we discussed, plus answers to any grammar or vocabulary questions that came up.
📅 Class 1 Agenda – Monday, August 25 @ 6:30pm
Theme: American Work Habits 🇺🇸💼
We’ll dive into what work culture looks like in the United States — the good, the bad, and the funny.
👉 Before class: Please watch short clips from Parks and Recreation and The Bear (links will be provided). These shows highlight two very different American work environments.
In class, we’ll:
👋 Do quick introductions to get to know each other
🎬 Discuss Parks & Rec vs. The Bear: different work settings, public service vs. restaurant culture
🏢 Compare U.S. work hierarchies and relationships between coworkers
⚖️ Talk about “workaholism,” meritocracy, and class in the U.S.
🚨 Explore sensitive but real workplace issues: sexual harassment, inequality, and office dynamics
💡 Reflect on why these two shows were chosen and what they reveal about American culture
By the end of class, you’ll walk away with new vocabulary, cultural insights, and practice discussing complex ideas in English.

🍎About Me
Hi, I’m Maddie! I come from a multicultural background — my mom is from the Philippines and my dad is Irish-American. My whole life I’ve played a diplomatic role in bridging cultures, and I believe that developing cultural understanding not only elevates your language skills but also creates connections that make learning more enriching.
I’m a polyglot who has studied and learned five languages. I studied French and Chinese at Arizona State University, and was honored to be selected as a Department of Defense Scholar. Through this program, I served as a US student ambassador in Brazil, where I learned Portuguese from 0 to C+ in just one year. Today, I work as a freelance English teacher, helping students worldwide achieve their language goals — whether for travel, family, personal, or professional success.
✨ This group is for learners who are open-minded, curious, and respectful. Because we’ll sometimes touch on sensitive cultural themes, it’s important that everyone comes ready to listen and share ideas in a supportive way.
💬 Come join us for the first class and see how fun and powerful it can be to learn English through real cultural exploration!
