- 'Historic Shoreditch' Treasure Hunt - can you find the treasure?Old Street Tube Station (outside the station - come out of exit 1 - Old Street East), London
Come along on Sunday 7th September for a treasure hunt around Shoreditch!
The treasure hunts are a good way to get to know an area whilst meeting new people.
About Shoreditch
The area used to be known as "Soersditch" which translates as "Sewer Ditch", in reference to a drain or watercourse in what was once a boggy area.Shoreditch was centred on St Leonard's Church at the crossroads where Shoreditch High Street and Kingsland Road are crossed by Old Street and Hackney Road. This junction is where two Roman roads crossed, going east/west from Colchester and Silchester and North/South from Lincoln and London.
How it works
Come along at 1:30pm and you will be randomly divided into teams of 3 people (or you can choose your own team beforehand). For fairness, any London Guides or Blue Badge Tour Guides won't be allowed to take part. Then each team will be given 15-20 written clues which you have to find the answers for. It's up to your team to work together to find the answers. You can answer them in any order and you will be provided with a map of the area to help you. It's not a race, so you can take your time getting to know the southbank.
All the answers to the clues will be found on the statues and blue plaques.
The treasure hunts are a good way to get to know an area whilst meeting and getting to know new people!
Prizes
The team to get the most correct answers and then return to base (a local pub) will win book vouchers for Waterstones bookshops of £10 per person. If more than one team gets the top score, there will be a tie break question back at the pub.
A £5 gift voucher per person will be given to each member of the team coming in second place and prizes will be given to each member of the team with the best team name.
Cost
Its £7 per person to take part (payable by cash, PayPal or Bank Transfer on the day), apart from Full Members where it is free!Become a Full Member

- Day trip by coach - along the Solent in Hampshire (only £26 each)Coach bays on Tothill Street, nearest tube: St. James's Park, London26,00 GBP
Come along on Saturday 13th September for a coach trip visiting two places along the Solent in Hampshire.
About the trip
The Solent is a strait of water in Hampshire between the mainland and the Isle of Wight. Its a natural harbour that has been used for over 1000 years and has lots of history. It is where Henry VIII's flagship; the Mary Rose sank in 1547 (was raised in 1982), the Mayflower left for the New World in 1620 and where the Titanic left for its maiden voyage in 1912.We will be visiting two places along the Solent:
Southampton Old Town
Southampton Old Town is at the top of the Solent. Southampton is a modern place, so we will only be visiting the old town, which has a medieval wall, a historic Tudor House, several other medieval buildings, a castle and the Sea City Museum, which tells the story of the history of the area. The museum also has a seperate exhibition on the Titanic which left Southampton on its maiden voyage in 1912. We will also visit the resting place nearby of a person who survived the Titanic sinking and has since been immortalised in history for what they did on board.
Hythe
Hythe is to the west of the Solent and with its waterfront, boasts fantastic views across the Solent and especially of the majestic cruise liners which come into the Port most days. The village centre with a pretty Georgian High Street offers a range of pretty shops and pubs.Entry
Entry to the Sea City Museum in Southampton Old Town is £7 per person (payable on the day by cash, paypal or bank transfer). This is optional.Coach seating
- If you wish to reserve a seat on the coach in advance, after you pay please look at the seating plan in the photos here and then email me - general@cultureseekers.org, with the seat number/s you wish to reserve. Its first come first served.
- The seat you sit on when you board the coach is yours for the day. If you wish to change seats on the coach during the day, you will need to get permission from the individual who is seated there.
