New York's Metropolitan Opera is showing Verdi's Macbeth in local theaters on Saturday Oct 17. (It's also live in New York this autumn.) Did you see it?

Let's Zoom together on the 20th and talk about what we saw, what we liked, whether it was clear or confusing, etc.
Witches, Banquo's ghost, the sinister "assassin's chorus", etc.

As always, I'll have an agenda of topics to keep us talking, so join in and talk with others who have seen the show!

Curious About Opera?

Let's Debrief - New York's Macbeth

Online event

Join us for a short presentation and then questions and answers, about what operas have to offer in the 21st century.

If you've seen an opera or two, tell us your story! If not, here's a good place to get somewhat familiar, and to plot your next steps, whether that means watching a fun opera online, or running for the door!

No far-flung terminology, no references to the "pre-Baroque", and no singing. Just come and share, and learn what you want to learn.

What's opera all about? Let's talk basics.

GATEWAY OPERAS are the most straightforward, accessible, easy-to-appreciate operas. An example is Puccini's La Boheme, one of the most popular operas in the world, a remarkable romantic tragedy.

To prepare for this discussion, let's all watch the same video at this link:
https://operavision.eu/performance/la-boheme-3

The video is provided by OperaVision, a free service supported by the European Union, that offers a rotating list of operas from around the world.

You can use this link on any screen, and see La Boheme at your leisure, prior to our chat on Nov. 10. Note: it is about 2 hours long, but you can stop and resume.

Don't forget to use the "CC" button at the top to turn on subtitles, and the Settings (gear) icon to set the captions in English.

At the meeting, we'll follow our usual "critic's agenda" to see what we liked and didn't, what we noticed or missed, and how this experience informs our next choices among available operas.

Let's Debrief A GATEWAY OPERA: La Boheme

November will be our PUBLISHING meeting. Come with your questions about -- and your own experiences with -- agents, editors, publishers, self-publishing, and everything related to getting your writing in print.

Our meeting will include short presentations from members who have various experiences and perspectives on aspects of publishing. Plenty of time for Q&A, and learning from each other.

We'll resume our normal format in December, so we'll designate three of our writers to submit samples for the 12/17 meeting.

NEW NorthEast Writers November Publishing Meeting

Three new original works by our members -- to read and then share suggestions aimed at more effective writing. Everyone is welcome -- sign up by Saturday the 12th to receive all the writing that we will talk about on the following Thursday (17th).

As usual, we'll incorporate into the meeting some discussion time for sharing favorite authors, books, writing techniques, and how to set and meet our goals as writers.

NEW does not focus on any particular genre or style. We've read and talked about fiction, nonfiction, humor, memoir, etc. etc. Come to learn, meet fellow writers, and have fun.
