Sangam First Gathering | An Open Conversation for Indian Students
Sangam First Gathering | An Open Conversation for Indian Students
This first Sangam gathering is simple. **\~ No agenda.** **\~ No pressure.** **\~ No expectations**. Just a few of us coming together at a café, sitting with a drink and having an **open, honest conversation.** This is a space to slow down and check in. How are you really doing? How has life in Canada been lately? What has been on your mind recently? What has been challenging? What has been settling? What has been okay? You can share as much or as little as you want. You can speak, listen, or just be there. I will also share a bit about **why Sangam is being created**, what inspired it, and the intention behind building a space that feels like a home away from home for Indian students in Toronto, where we can support each other and receive the support we need right now. There will be a **short, optional questionnaire** you can complete during or after the meetup. Nothing intense, just a gentle way for us to better understand what kind of support would feel most helpful to you right now, so this group grows with care and intention. *** ### **This gathering is for you if** Are you an **Indian student in Toronto**, new or not-so-new? You have been adjusting, feeling unsure, or just finding your footing. You would appreciate **real conversation and community**. Or you simply want to meet people who understand this journey. **Come as you are.** No pressure to explain yourself. Just real connection at your own pace. This first meetup is about listening, meeting each other, and beginning to shape Sangam together.

Hackathon: AI Manipulation
Hackathon: AI Manipulation
**Important registration information: To participate in this event, please sign up through [Apart Research's event page ](https://apartresearch.com/sprints/ai-manipulation-hackathon-2026-01-09-to-2026-01-11)before registering. You are also encouraged to make a team on [Apart Research's Discord Sever](https://discord.gg/Bu7h9qZJ) prior to the start of the hackathon.** The line between authentic interaction and strategic manipulation is disappearing as AI systems master deception, sycophancy, sandbagging, and psychological exploitation at scale. Our ability to detect, measure, and counter these behaviours is dangerously underdeveloped. This hackathon brings together 500+ builders to prototype systems that could help us measure, detect, and defend against AI manipulation. You'll have one intensive weekend to build something real – tools that could actually help us understand and mitigate one of AI safety's most pressing challenges. **Top teams get:** * **💰 $2,000 in cash prizes** * **The chance to continue development through Apart Research's Fellowship program** * **Guaranteed acceptance to present at the [IASEAI workshop in Paris](https://www.iaseai.org/our-programs/iaseai26) on the 26th of February 2026** You will work in teams over one weekend and submit open-source benchmarks, detection tools, scenario analyses, monitoring tools, or empirical research advancing our understanding of AI trajectories. [Trajectory Labs](https://www.trajectorylabs.org/), the jamsite, provides a comfortable and spacious coworking space along with coffee, tea, and other refreshments (meals not provided, but there are many nearby options). Other locations will also be taking part!

Query Letter & Synopsis Workshop
Query Letter & Synopsis Workshop
Have a completed manuscript and ready to take the next step? Need to polish up your submission materials? Curious about the submission process for trad publishing? Then you'll want to join our query letter and synopsis workshop. The meeting will run the same way as our usualy Saturday in-person meetups, but we'll be reviewing query letters and synopses instead of actual stories. Feel free to bring in a query letter, a synopsis, or both. Not sure what any of this means? In trad publishing, with few exceptions, publishers don't accept unsolicited manuscripts (which means you can't submit to them without an agent). But before an agent will even read your full manuscript, they usually ask that you send a query letter, possibly along with a synopsis and sample pages. A query letter is basically a one-page pitch for your book, providing all the relevant stats (genre, age category, word count), a brief summary of the premise meant to entice them into reading more, and a bio. See here for a more detailed breakdown: https://janefriedman.com/query-letters/ A synopsis outlines all the major beats/plot points of your novel, including the ending. They can range anywhere from one page to a few pages (usually on the shorter side), depending on the agent. See here for more details: https://janefriedman.com/how-to-write-a-novel-synopsis/ We'll start the session with some time for questions and then launch straight into the critique, so come prepared! Listeners are also welcome. We'll be meeting at the MaRS Building in the usual writing sprint spot (up the stairs near Teabot). Note: This process only applies to traditional publishing, but all are welcome to attend. If there's enough demand, more of these will be scheduled in the future.

The Matzah Ball by Jean Meltzer
The Matzah Ball by Jean Meltzer
I don't usually pick romance but I really wanted to do a Hanukkah book. It's a bit on the longer side but hopefully a quick read. The library only has 5 audiobooks so please try to remember to "release it" when you're done. Columbus libraries: [https://cml.bibliocommons.com/v2/record/S105C3503238](https://cml.bibliocommons.com/v2/record/S105C3503238) Location: The Goat Riversouth [219 South High Street, Columbus, Ohio 43215](https://www.google.com/maps?q=219%20South%20High%20Street%2C%20Columbus%2C%20Ohio%2043215%2C%20United%20States) [Menu](https://static1.squarespace.com/static/686d3ed16745133042482c5f/t/68ff654dbb03b96875430bde/1761568077220/all_brunch-20250311.pdf) Book summary: Rachel Rubenstein-Goldblatt is a nice Jewish girl with a shameful secret: she loves Christmas. For a decade she’s hidden her career as a Christmas romance novelist from her family. Her talent has made her a bestseller even as her chronic illness has always kept the kind of love she writes about out of reach. But when her diversity-conscious publisher insists she write a Hanukkah romance, her well of inspiration suddenly runs dry. Hanukkah’s not magical. It’s not merry. It’s not *Christmas*. Desperate not to lose her contract, Rachel’s determined to find her muse at the Matzah Ball, a Jewish music celebration on the last night of Hanukkah, even if it means working with her summer camp archenemy—Jacob Greenberg. Though Rachel and Jacob haven’t seen each other since they were kids, their grudge still glows brighter than a menorah. But as they spend more time together, Rachel finds herself drawn to Hanukkah—and Jacob—in a way she never expected. Maybe this holiday of lights will be the spark she needed to set her heart ablaze.
