À propos de nous
Austin Sierra Club (local branch of the Sierra Club) holds outings for outdoor activities: hiking, camping, biking, backpacking, kayaking, community service projects, and more. These include local one-day events to greenbelts and natural areas, weekend trips to state parks, as well as longer trips to national parks.
All participants must sign our Sign-In Sheet with Participation Agreement before joining one of our outings. You are strongly urged to add your cell phone and emergency contact numbers on the sheet, for your safety. More information is needed for overnight trips.
Many of our events are rated Easy and everyone is invited to participate, but others have fitness and experience requirements. Smoking and vaping is not allowed on our events. Check with the Leader to see if pets are allowed.
Although it's not necessary to participate in our events, we encourage you to join the Sierra Club (in addition to the Meetup group), and support our efforts to protect the environment.

Sunday April 19 is our day to enjoy the park- participants can decide what they want to do during this day. There are usually hikes or other outings organized within the group. But wait - there’s more!
On Saturday April 18, (after Palo Duro SP, and before Caprock Canyons SP) we get to check out a huge area nearby that is not open to the public, and won’t be for at least three years!
The Cross Bar Special Recreation Management Area is big - 11,883 acres. It is the only BLM land in Texas.
We have received special permission to have them guide us across private property to get to the preserve. They are meeting us at the gate at 10:30am on Saturday April 18. It is about an hour drive from Palo Duro. The gate’s address is 9610 Brickplant Road, Amarillo, TX.

Wildflower camp out and Hike at Inks Lake
Inks Lake State Park, 3630 Park Rd 4 W, Burnet, TX, USRSVP on Meetup alone does not reserve a spot on the trip!
Inks Lake State Park https://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/inks-lake
is the gem of the Texas Hill Country. This park gets some of the best and widest variety of flowers, which show off beautifully against the red granite landscape.Park map: https://tpwd.texas.gov/publications/pwdpubs/media/park_maps/pwd_mp_p4507_015k.pdf
On Monday we will hike a 5 mile loop trail at a moderately brisk pace on rugged terrain. The rest of the time will be free to explore on your own. Swimming is popular (NO LIFEGUARD ON DUTY), as is fishing. The park rents kayaks, canoes, and paddle boats, or bring your own. Skies are excellent for stargazing. No dogs.
Everyone must supply their own transportation, camping gear & food. There will be a few shared stoves. We will try our best to not use disposable plates, bowls etc. or single use plastic beverage containers in an effort to curb global warming. Carpooling is encouraged, but not organized by the Sierra Club. We have 2 large lakeside campsites reserved with restrooms with showers nearby.
Everyone is responsible for their own $7 park entry fee. Camping fee for 2 nights is $20 (nonrefundable) - see below. Income which exceeds expenses will be donated to the Sierra Club to support our conservation work. There is also a parking fee for all the cars that exceed 2 per campsite limit, so carpooling is economical as well as ecological.

Earth Day Lady Bird Lake dinner walk
The Rock at Town Lake Trail, 2100 Veteran's Drive, Austin, TX, USJoin us for a 4.5-mile easy-paced walk on the hard-packed dirt trail around Lady Bird Lake. We'll stop for a relaxed, healthy dinner at the 3-mile mark at Casa de Luz , known for its welcoming atmosphere and whole plant nutrition. Bring cash / card (approx $15). Those not wanting to stop will need to complete the remaining 1.5 miles on their own. No pets please.
"The Rock" starting point is the nickname for the trailhead area of Lady Bird Lake where Veterans Dr passes under Mopac. It is at the north end of the Roberta Crenshaw bridge. You may navigate to "2104 Stephen F Austin Dr · Austin, TX". There may be free parking in a dirt lot under the Mopac overpass; otherwise there is paid parking along Veterans Dr - download the Park ATX app to pay (approx $4). If coming from south Austin, it is more convenient to park at the south end of the Roberta Crenshaw bridge, which is currently free - check signs. Also consider taking CapMetro.
Participants must sign a Liability Waiver at the trailhead. You may view the waiver document: https://tinyurl.com/SCSignUpSheet2020 .
If not already a member, we encourage you to join the Sierra Club (the national club, not just the Meetup group) and help protect the environment and our democracy.
WEATHER NOTE: The hike may be cancelled due to rain or anticipated bad weather. A decision would be made on this page 1 hour before start time.
