Rencontre avec Javad Djavahery autour de son livre L’ayatollah aimait sa femme plus que Dieu (éd Gallimard 2026). La rencontre sera suivie à 19 h 30 d’un pot de l’amitié. À 20 h Projection du film La sirène (2023), réalisation Spideh Farsi, musique Erik Truffaz. La séance sera prolongée par un échange avec Javad Djavahery, scénariste du film.
Javad Djavahery est un écrivain de langues française et persane, scénariste et producteur de cinéma (Safar-E Maryam ; Téhéran sans autorisation ; Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk).

À quinze ans à peine, Maryam est la veuve la plus jeune, la plus intrépide et la plus irrésistible qu'il ait été donné d'héberger à Sayed Issah, mollah respecté de Nadjaf, haut lieu de l'islam chiite. Tant et si bien qu'il finit par l'épouser, sous l'oeil complice de Khanoum, sa première épouse et la mère de ses neuf enfants. Mais face à l'appétit insatiable de Maryam pour le savoir, les nuits qu'il espérait vouer à l'amour sont désormais consacrées à l'étude, amenant le saint homme à braver l'autorité de ses pairs...
Faite de récits enchâssés, dans la tradition du conte oriental, l'histoire commence de nos jours quand Maryam, devenue Dâ, grand-mère centenaire, vénérée et fantasque, disparaît. Tous les enfants et petits-enfants se réunissent pour la retrouver. Les recherches sont l'occasion d'explorer les secrets anciens qui façonnent les mythes familiaux et le destin du pays. Javad Djavahery nous offre un livre puissant qui, paré des atours de la légende, déploie l'histoire de l'Iran et son entrée brutale dans la modernité.

Join us for a discussion with Javad Djavahery about his book, *The Ayatollah Loved His Wife More Than God* (Gallimard, 2026). The event will be followed at 7:30 p.m. by a reception. At 8:00 p.m., there will be a screening of the film *The Mermaid* (2023), directed by Spideh Farsi, with music by Erik Truffaz. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Javad Djavahery, the film's screenwriter.

The Ayatollah Loved His Wife More Than God
At just fifteen years old, Maryam was the youngest, most intrepid, and most irresistible widow that Sayed Issah, the respected mullah of Najaf, a major center of Shiite Islam, had ever had the privilege of hosting. So much so that he eventually married her, with the tacit approval of Khanoum, his first wife and the mother of his nine children. Composed of nested narratives, in the tradition of the oriental tale, the story begins in the present day when Maryam, now known as Da, a revered and eccentric centenarian grandmother, disappears. All her children and grandchildren gather to find her. Research offers an opportunity to explore the ancient secrets that shape family myths and the destiny of the nation. Javad Djavahery presents us with a powerful book that, adorned with the trappings of legend, unfolds the history of Iran and its brutal entry into modernity.
