À quelques minutes de la frontière espagnole, perché dans les Pyrénées françaises, l'hôtel du Belvédère, véritable paquebot de béton armé, pointe sa proue immobile vers la mer. À la faveur d'une résidence d'écrivain, l'autrice se retrouve seule occupante de l'imposant vestige des années 1930. Dans ce refuge chargé de la mémoire des voyageurs en transit, elle ouvre sa « mallette Fondane ». Fascinée par ce poète mort en déportation en 1944, elle y rassemble depuis des années tout ce qui le concerne.
Devant la mer, elle reconstitue l'enquête qu'elle a menée de l'autre côté de l'Atlantique, sur les traces du seul film de Benjamin Fondane, réalisé en Argentine grâce à Victoria Ocampo puis mystérieusement perdu, et fait revivre le trio indestructible formé par l'auteur du Mal des fantômes avec sa femme, Geneviève, et sa soeur Line.
La folie qui monte en Europe à la fin des années 1930, l'existence brisée du trio trouvent aujourd'hui un écho troublant, que Laura Alcoba souligne avec une grande sensibilité.

A novelistic investigation
Just minutes from the Spanish border, perched in the French Pyrenees, the Hôtel du Belvédère, a veritable ocean liner of reinforced concrete, points its motionless prow towards the sea. During a writer's residency, the author finds herself the sole occupant of this imposing relic of the 1930s. In this refuge steeped in the memories of travelers in transit, she opens her "Fondane briefcase." Fascinated by this poet who died in deportation in 1944, she has been collecting everything related to him for years.
Facing the sea, she retraces the investigation she conducted across the Atlantic, following the trail of Benjamin Fondane's only film, made in Argentina thanks to Victoria Ocampo and then mysteriously lost, and brings back to life the indestructible trio formed by the director of *The Evil of Ghosts* with his wife, Geneviève, and his sister, Line.
The rising madness in Europe at the end of the 1930s and the shattered lives of the trio find a disturbing echo today, which Laura Alcoba highlights with great sensitivity.
