À propos de nous
Philo Agora is a Sydney based philosophy group that has been meeting for over a dozen years. We have met in cafes and bars in Glebe, Dulwich Hill, Leichhardt, and now meet at Association for Good Government near the Redfern Station. We name our group of philosophical discourse, ‘Philo Agora’, the connection of ‘philo’ - short for philosophy to the Greek word ’agora’, a place or a gathering, physical or intellectual, where people discuss or argue matters of concern.
We convene on the second and fourth Monday of every month. The second Monday is our normal presentation from a guest presenter whilst the fourth Monday is a less structured open forum for those just looking to meet up. The first meeting of the month is a talk of 20 minutes relating to a philosopher, philosophy or philosophical theme. The chairman takes a few specific questions on the talk, and then there is a 10 minute break. The chairman then invites responses to the talk to a maximum of 3 minutes. The meeting closes with the presenter having the last word.
Samuel ALEXANDER is the current convenor.

Science mistakes the universe for a blind machine. But what if it is our dance partner in the play of consciousness?
Glynn Curran is a retired lecturer at WEA and guest lecturer at corporate, humanist and community groups.
On the second Monday of the month, Philo Agora has a speaker on a philosophical topic and a Q&A and discussion after. On the fourth Monday we meet again for open philosophical discussion.
Philo Agora's format is a talk for 20 minutes starting at 7:15 for 7:30. The presenter then answers any questions of clarification from the floor. We then take a break of 5 minutes for more coffee and to mull over the talk and discuss it within small groups. The microphone is then passed around the audience for comment, opinion, and often counter argument to a maximum of 3 minutes. The presenter is then given a 5 minute right of reply.
We usually finish up at 9pm. The cover charge is $5 for the talk. There are tea and coffee facilities available in-house.
