Jani Evakallio - Perils of Time
Time is relentless. It does not care about you. It just marches on, tick by tick by tick. The more time passes, the more things can go wrong. Entropy always increases with time.
With the advent of single-page applications, we, as web developers, had to invent new ways of thinking about state that changes over time, spawning libraries like React and Redux. Real-time applications have forced us to contend with incremental accumulation of state. Today, we have access to tools like React Native, Electron and ServiceWorker to build mobile and desktop apps that, through persistence and offline support, extend the complexity and lifetime of our state further than before.
Can we use our existing libraries and conceptual toolkit manage app state that survives reboots, code updates, eventual consistency, and inevitability of entropy — or do we, perhaps, need a new one?
