March Meeting, NOLA Fiber, SXSW, Developer Job Posting

From: Barrett C.
Sent on: Monday, March 1, 2010, 12:22 PM
Hello again everyone,

It seems like forever since we've all gotten together. February was a great, but long month. I hope everyone had a good time and is working your way back into the saddle.

There are a number of things I want to pass on to you today, so let's get to them.

1) March Meeting

The meeting has been scheduled for the 17th. We are going to keep to the schedule even though that is St. Patrick's Day. Cade Roux will present on Data Warehousing. I will post some details to the event calendar soon.

2) NOLA Fiber

Many of you may have already heard about Google's Fiber for Communities project. If you haven't heard, Google wants to deploy fiber in an entire city. I know what you are thinking: "Yes please!". You certainly aren't alone in your desire. A number of people have started a local effort to bring this initiative here. There have already been a couple of meetings and the group has contacted many prominent people in local community and government. We think NOLA has huge advantages over other communities, so we are working very hard to tell them our story.

What can you do?

  • Join the Google Group nofiber to keep up to date.
  • Visit the website to see what we have so far. Make sure to share your ideas and stories.
  • Start talking to people about it. Use #nolafiber on Twitter.
  • Volunteer to help. If you think you can contribute in anyway please join the group and let us know. Whether technical, your connections or just plain man power every bit will help. If you have any specific questions, you can contact me directly as well.

The deadline is March 26th, but our campaign is only just starting and will continue well passed the initial submission. So, now is a great time to get involved in what could be a major opportunity for the city.

On a related note, I don't think we are asking people to submit New Orleans directly to Google. We are drafting uniform language and information to help with our unified front.

3) SXSW Trip

I have mentioned the trip a couple of times at gnocode, but it is finally hear: The Net2NO bus trip to the South by Southwest conference in Austin, TX, March 12th through 16th is upon us. There are still spots available on the bus and for accommodations. You can find out more at the website below and @sxswnola I am attending and hope we can show of some of the talented developers we have in New Orleans.

4) Developer Job Posting

Zehnder Communication has the following job opening. They are currently interviewing candidates, but there is still time to submit a resume. (It got lost in the shuffle of last month. Sorry!)

"We are looking for a developer who has experience in web development
technologies, particularly ColdFusion, PHP & .NET. Mobile development is a
big plus (iPhone / Andriod). It is a great opportunity for a software
developer who wants to work on new and emerging technologies.

We have a very unique culture here at Zehnder and it takes a special person
to work here. We are looking for someone who can embrace our culture and
strives to do great work. Our mission statement is Make A Difference, Do
Great Work, Earn A Profit and Have Fun."

They also do some work with Augmented Reality if that's your thing.

You can direct any inquires to Dave Maher at [address removed] or @dmaher.

That's it for now. I'll see you on the 17th, when I am sure there will be plenty more to share.

Thanks,
Barrett M. Conrad
