Come and enjoy learning West Coast Swing in downtown San Mateo! This is a popular form of swing dancing that has spread around the world.
One of the greatest things about west coast swing is that the dance is highly personalized. Although it is a ‘lead and follow’ partner dance with the follower traveling up and down the slot, it allows for a vast amount of freedom, expression and individuality.

**Beginner West Coast Swing** is a class designed for students new to the dance. It will be focused on getting the basic rhythms and foundational patterns (left side pass, underarm turn, and sugar push) of the dance.

**Intermediate West Coast Swing** is a class designed for students who feel comfortable in their basics, but want to expand their knowledge. This class will focus on lots of basic variations and foundational whip technique and variations. This class will get you comfortable with both 6-count, 8-count patterns, and basic extensions.

Welcome to an extraordinary journey into Contact Improvisation, a revolutionary dance form that transforms how we move, connect, and communicate through our bodies. Under the guidance of Heather, you’ll explore this unique practice that combines the spontaneity of improvisation with the discovery of shared physical dialogue.

Contact Improvisation is far more than a dance technique—it’s a philosophy of movement that celebrates the natural intelligence of the body and the beautiful complexity of human connection. In our classes, you’ll discover how to create a seamless conversation through touch, weight-sharing, and mutual responsiveness, all while maintaining the highest standards of safety and consent.

**What to Expect in Class**
Each Contact Improvisation class with Heather is carefully structured to build skills progressively while honoring the improvisational nature of the form. Classes typically begin with individual warm-up exercises that help you connect with your own body, find your center, and prepare for the shared exploration ahead.

**Solo Preparation:** We start by developing what Contact Improvisation practitioners call “the small dance”—the subtle, constant adjustments your body makes to maintain balance and respond to gravity. This foundational awareness becomes the basis for all partner work and helps you develop the sensitivity needed for responsive dancing.

**Partner Exercises:** Gradually, we introduce simple partner exercises that teach the fundamental skills of weight-sharing, following points of contact, and maintaining connection while moving. These exercises are designed to build trust and communication skills while developing the physical techniques that make more complex improvisation possible.

* **What to wear:** Proper attire is crucial for both safety and full participation in Contact Improvisation. Since this practice involves extensive floor work, rolling, sliding, and physical contact, appropriate clothing like comfortable t-shirts to cover and protect your body and full length pants are recommended.

* **Hair and Jewelry:** Long hair should be secured away from the face and neck to prevent it from interfering with movement or getting caught during partner work. Remove all jewelry, including rings, earrings, necklaces, and watches, as these can cause injury to yourself or your dance partners during close contact.

**Technique All Levels:** This class is designed to lay a strong foundation in the art of dancing in high heels. Each session starts with a comprehensive warm-up, focusing on essential elements such as proper footwork, impeccable posture and alignment. Learn to walk with confidence, creating elegant lines and mastering show-stopping sequences that flow seamlessly with the music.

**No prior experience required; it is designed for newcomers eager to explore the artistry and empowerment of dancing in high heels.**

**What to Bring:**

* **If it is your first time in heels it is suggested to wear stilleto booties open toe between 3.5″ to 4″ heel** to start and work your way to a higher heel. We also suggest heels with strong ankle support.
* Bring an outfit that is comfortable, flattering, and easy to move in; pants, cute little shorts, or leggings are great.
* **Knee pads** so that you can slide around on the floor comfortably. Just make sure that your outfit allows you to move freely and doesn’t restrict your movement in any way.

Hello! We invite you and your friends to join our fun weekly dance classes and events open for all levels students at the Motion Arts Center dance studio in downtown San Mateo! We are Gustavo and Jesica Hornos, dancers, teachers and directors of the studio. We create a very fun and friendly atmosphere for you to learn how to dance.
