George, Kathy and their 3 children fled 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York in December 1975 after having lived in the house only 28 days. The family claimed they had endured a terrifying haunting with alleged demonic forces claiming their territory within the home.
The story was sensationalised in the 1977 book The Amityville Horror by Jay Anson and subsequent films sparking debate into whether this was a real haunting or just a clever hoax.
The house was the site of a family annihilation carried out by Ronald DeFeo Jr. who shot and killed six members of his family in 1974.
