VERTICAL LAZIO — Hike Sgurgola: Spartacus’ Village & the Sacco Valley 🥾🌿
Discover a hidden corner of Lazio about an hour from Rome: Sgurgola, a village once founded as a fortress by Spartacus, now a charming hamlet encircling castle ruins. This guided loop hike moves from the train station into the old town, then up through forested trails to reveal dramatic views, history, and the wild side of the Sacco Valley.

• Route: Loop starting/ending at Sgurgola Train Station (some variations possible)
What to expect
- A mix of village streets, historic sites, and steep forest trails with panoramic views of the Sacco Valley.
- A full-day, demanding hike with natural obstacles (roots, rocks, occasional narrow tracks).
- Interpreted commentary on local history, geology, flora and fauna from a professional guide.
Who this is for
- Experienced hikers, adventurous expats and travelers who are comfortable with sustained uphill walking and uneven terrain.
- Not recommended for beginners, those with mobility limitations, or small children without adequate experience.
Meeting & logistics
- Please meet 15 minutes before departure at Sgurgola Train Station to check gear and receive a short safety briefing.
- The guide reserves the right to alter the route or duration for safety or weather reasons.
- Transport to/from the trail, food, and attraction entrance fees are NOT included.
What to bring (must / recommended)
• Obligatory: hiking boots, 1.5 L water, layered clothing, hiking poles
• Recommended: comfortable backpack, raincoat, sunscreen, hat, trail snacks
