OK…let’s try this again. This is a new hike for me! I’ve heard it’s an awesome trail. 😎 We hike as a group and hike at an average moving pace of about 2.5mph. Everyone is expected to wait at all intersections & periodically otherwise so that we can regroup and so no one is left behind or hiking on their own for safety purposes. We will plan to take a break at the summit & we will stop as necessary along the way.

Difficulty: about 8 to 9 miles with about 2,500 feet elevation gain.

HIKE DESCRIPTION: Greyrock Mountain (7,513') stands prominently over the north rim of Poudre Canyon, 25 minutes from downtown Fort Collins, Colorado. The Grey Rock Trail and Grey Rock Meadows Trail form a loop around the conical formation, with a short but challenging spur that leads to the summit. Once at the summit, we should have a great view of the surrounding area looking down into Fort Collins and up into the canyon. We can also see the Mummy Range in the northern part of RMNP. DOGS ALLOWED IF FOLLOW PARK RULES: Dogs must be on leash at all times. Please be sure your dog is well behaved and can handle the length of the walk. Dog owners must clean up pet excrement.

If you use google maps, you can type in “Greyrock Trailhead” for directions. Alternatively here are directions: Travel 11 miles northwest of Fort Collins on U.S. Highway 287 to Colorado Highway 14. Turn left on CO 14, and travel 9 miles to the Greyrock parking lot on the south side of the road.

Difficulty: about 5.5 to 6 miles with about 850-900 feet elevation gain.

HIKE DESCRIPTION: The Meyers Homestead Trail is an out-and-back hike that travels through Meyers Gulch, past the remnants of a historic homestead, to an overlook offering panoramic views of Boulder Canyon and the snowcapped mountains of Indian Peaks. It’s a wide trail through meadows, stands of aspen, and punctuated by ponderosa pine. We will do the following hike in Alltrails: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/colorado/meyers-homestead-trail

We hike as a group and hike at an average moving pace of about 2.5 to 3mph. Although the group may split up due to different hiking paces, everyone is expected to wait at all intersections & periodically otherwise so that we can regroup and so no one is left behind for safety purposes. We will plan to take a break at a convenient spot & we will stop as needed along the way for water, snacks, pictures, etc.

DOGS: 🚫 No dogs allowed at Bobcat Ridge Natural Area.

HIKE DESCRIPTION: Let’s go to Bobcat Ridge Natural Area…where there are grassy valleys, foothills, ponderosa pines, stunning red rock cliffs and the ridge with views of the distant mountains. Bobcat Ridge is home to elk, wild turkey, mountain lions and other wildlife. We will pass & visit a historic homesite. On October 17, 2020, the Cameron Peak Fire burned 80% of Bobcat Ridge Natural Area. The wildfire burned grassland, shrub, and forest habitat, while damaging infrastructure such as bridges, trails, and small portions of historic buildings. This is a one-way hike where we start in Roxborough State Park…hike up to Carpenter Peak…hit the Colorado Trail over to Waterton Canyon Dam, then hike Waterton Canyon…and hope to see some bighorn sheep in the canyon. This time of year there is a chance to see the young bighorn sheep…they are so cute if we are lucky enough to see them.

CARPOOL/FEE: This is a one-way hike from Roxborough State Park to Waterton Canyon, so it will require a carpool, which is about a 15 minute drive. We will coordinate so those with a state park pass drive from the Waterton Canyon Parking Lot into Roxborough.

DIFFICULTY: about 13.5 miles with almost 1,300 feet elevation gain.

HIKE DESCRIPTION: Let’s do a one-way hike starting in Roxborough State Park where we will climb to the 7,166 foot Carpenter Peak which is the high point in Roxborough State Park. The surrounding red rock formations are truly impressive dramatic hogbacks, spires, and monoliths of sandstone. From Carpenter Peak, we will take the trail that connects to Waterton Canyon at the Strontia Springs Dam. Then we will hike the Waterton Canyon trail from the dam to the parking area. The Waterton Canyon trail winds alongside the South Platte River through thick cottonwood trees and towering canyon cliffs. The views are pretty of the South Platte River rushing through Waterton Canyon with rugged hillsides on either side. The area has a great deal of wildlife, including the possibility of seeing Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep…and maybe even some young sheep this time of year.

DOGS: 🚫 Not allowed in Roxborough State Park or Waterton Canyon.

ADDRESS/DIRECTIONS: We will meet at the Waterton Canyon parking lot and carpool from there into Roxborough State Park. From C-470, exit at CO 121/Wadsworth Blvd. and go south past the entrance for Chatfield State Park. At Waterton Rd., go left/southeast and the parking lot is the second entrance on the left. If you use Apple Maps or Google Maps, you can type in “Waterton Canyon Parking” to get directions.
