Welcome to Marco Polo Project Meetup page!
We are a Cross-Cultural Education group and we run the Translation Club, an interactive translation workshops for Japanese and English learners. In a nutshell it is about this.
- Multilingual teams co-translate articles on contemporary cultural and social issues, self-facilitated in small groups.
- You will engage in authentic conversations, moving beyond small talk, and explore real-world topics.
- In a safe, supportive environment promoting language learning and cultural exchange.
- It is open to all, but designed for intermediate to advanced learners (one of the few in Tokyo!); it is intellectually engaging and we hope will be an enjoyable experience.
Please find here samples of articles that we have been translating lately to get an idea of the level required,

but don't forget, even if you feel the articles are too hard for you, it is an open group so try out and see for yourself if you enjoy it, or if you learn something!

• What we'll do
Each session is an opportunity to do group translation, enjoy general social time and reflect on the translation process, i.e. specific vocabulary, sentences which were difficult/insightful, etc. We form groups of 3 to 5 people with some native speakers of English, and some native speakers of Japanese.
There is a text for us to translate together, we need to use both of the group languages (e.g Japanese and English) to complete the translation. The texts are recent articles about contemporary cultural or social issues.
This is one of the few language exchange events in Tokyo that cater to Intermediate to Advanced learners of Japanese and native speakers. We have a core of dedicated language learners who come every week and tackle a different text on a different topic.
Check out some sample articles to see for yourself!

The workshops are great for English and Japanese learners and speakers who want to develop their knowledge of language and meet other people who speak their language.
