Talk - An invitation to Deep Learning with applications to textual data

Join us for an invited talk from Pontus Stenetorp from University College London (UCL) giving an introduction to the use of deep learning techniques for processing textual data.

Machine Learning (ML) – and Deep Learning in particular – has taken the world by storm over the last few years. It is my position that ML is now becoming an essential tool in every programmers toolbox and in this talk I will seek to show the history, theoretical underpinnings, and practical applications of ML with a particular focus on my own area of expertise – Natural Language Processing. My hope is that after this talk you may see how you can apply ML to help you in your day-to-day challenges.

If you are planning on attending, do bring a laptop as I intend to provide exercises and executable examples to ease the understanding of key concepts. Do not be afraid to join even if the idea of maths is something you left behind when you graduated from university, a healthy dose of curiosity is hopefully all we need to have fun exploring ML together.

About the speaker:

I am a researcher and educator that finds Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning research to be fascinating. Currently, I am a Senior Research Associate at University College London (UCL) and a member of the Machine Reading Group. I received a PhD from the University of Tokyo in 2013 and a MSc Eng from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in 2010. My current research focuses on end-to-end Deep Learning models that learns with a minimal amount of human supervision – with a particular focus on allowing computers to pass real-world exams – and is supported by the Paul G Allen Family Foundation.
