How do we evaluate beauty?

Beauty surrounds us, yet what we mean by “beauty” is far from simple. Is beauty purely subjective, shaped by culture and personal taste, or are there deeper standards that guide how we recognise and value it? Art, nature, people, and ideas all raise questions about how we evaluate what we call beautiful.

This week at IQ Cafe we’ll explore how different philosophies, religions, and worldviews understand beauty and the ways we judge and respond to it. After a short introduction, you’ll have the opportunity to share your own thoughts and experiences in small discussion groups.

🕒 Schedule:
8:00-8:20 - Listen to a bilingual lecture on the night's topic while enjoying snacks and coffee
8:20-9:00 - Discussion in small groups
Afterwards - Stick around and hang out with new friends!

What is IQ Cafe?
IQ Cafe is a place that wants to create a space for you to think deeply.
We think it's a shame how many people go through life without reflecting on things that matter. It’s important to take the time to think about the difficult questions in life. It can be easy to live your life and just go through the motions.

The presentations at IQ Cafe are always bilingual because we want you to be able to practice Japanese and English! For the discussion time, there are tables with English and Japanese available. Let's practice language together!

美は私たちの身の回りにあふれていますが、「美しさ」とは何かを考えると、とても単純なものではありません。美しさは文化や個人の好みによる主観的なものなのでしょうか。それとも、美を認識し価値づけるための、より深い基準があるのでしょうか。芸術、自然、人、そして考え方そのものが、「美しさをどのように評価するのか」という問いを私たちに投げかけます。

今週のIQカフェでは、さまざまな哲学・宗教・世界観が美をどのように理解しているのか、そして私たちが美をどのように判断し、向き合っているのかを探っていきます。短い導入のあと、少人数のディスカッショングループに分かれ、自分自身の考えや経験を分かち合う時間を持ちます。
