## Free Portrait Drawing Workshop with Craig Chivers!

Spend an evening with Craig Chivers at Tokyo Art Tank vol 9 and learn his secrets of portrait drawing!

He is an expert artist who has exhibited his work in 4 continents and you may have read about him online because he is one of the organizers of Tokyo’s Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School as well as being the head art teacher at his private art school in Hiroo. We are so very happy that Craig will be teaching portrait drawing for free and we hope that you take advantage this once in a life time opportunity.

Details:
A full day (afternoon & evening) workshop in the art of classical portrait drawing.

No art experience is necessary.

Time:
Part 1: The conceptual portrait: 3-6 pm
Part 2: The synthetic portrait: 7-10 pm

Note: You may attend either or both parts. Part two will be a continuation of part one. Please try to arrive early in order to find a spot and get set up. Latecomers are welcome, just understand that you may have to wait for a break to be included in either of the classes.

Cost: Free, everyone must bring their own drawing materials. Materials will not be provided or available.

Materials (preferred):
Charcoal (natural vine charcoal is best ミズキ is the best alternative, these should be the thin, hard, “stick” variety, not pastel, pastel pencils or charcoal pencils) kneeded gum eraser, small soft cloth (leather chamois is best) sandpaper for sharpening

Pencil is also fine (HB is preferred), kneaded eraser, hard erasers, small knife for sharpening

Paper: A Pad of white drawing paper A2 or A3 (not smaller) Paper that is made for charcoal, pastel or pencil drawing. Canson make some great inexpensive paper that can be found locally.

Description:
Part 1: The conceptual portrait (3-6 pm)
The first class will consist of exploring portraiture based on Anatomy, Proportion, Geometry, Sculpture, Old Master Drawings and other conceptual models and methods.

Part 2: The synthetic portrait (7-10 pm)
The second class will take the concepts explored in the first class and apply them to working with a live model to create a finished portrait. Observation will be used in conjunction with conceptual knowledge filtered through personal feeling for with the aim of creating a work that is both lifelike and expressive.
