This gathering is a 6 session meetup series. It is part of our “circles” project, in which we organize small, high-commitment, volunteer-led groups that gather 4-8 weeks in a row around specific themes.
💭 Aufheben: Exploring ideas using Hegelian dialectics 💭
"Aufheben is... a word which has a double meaning: it means to keep, to preserve, and at the same time to cause to cease, to set aside... Thus, what is sublated is at the same time preserved; it has only lost its immediacy, but it is not on that account annihilated."
— G.W. F. Hegel, Science of Logic (1812–1816)
In this circle, we will gather to explore ideas and beliefs using one of the most interesting models of reasoning by dialogue, coined by one of the major figures of German idealism in philosophy, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel.
After a brief introduction and understanding of the Sublation (Aufheben) model, we will use what we learned to engage in a discussion of two seemingly opposite ideas. Each time, we will have a topic decided by the group at the end of the previous week's meeting. In the lead-up to a meeting, members are encouraged to share resources on the topic—articles, videos, podcasts, whatever—but we'll save our personal beliefs for the dialogue.
Some examples of topics we’d like to suggest include, but are by no means limited to:
- Pessimism vs Optimism
- Acceptance vs Overcoming
- Materialism vs Non-Materialism
- Determinism vs Free Will
We encourage participants to come with their own suggestions.
❗Please note: Although this circle may share common ground with the idea of a debate, the goal is not to “win” the conversation, but to reach new understandings. **If your goal is to use facts and logic to prove how smart and right you are, this is NOT the circle for you.**⛔
✔️The purpose of this circle is to immerse ourselves in conversation, challenging our own beliefs and ideas while getting to know the people around us, creating new bonds through engagement, love for philosophy, and deep thought.
✅Please come with an open mind and an open heart, curious about your own mind and the minds of others.
📅 This circle meet every 13:00 - 15:00 for 6 weeks, starting March 14th
🔥 Signup closes March 2nd.

⭕ About Circles
Circles are small, volunteer-led, high-commitment groups that gather 4-8 weeks in a row around specific themes.
With circles, we bring the best parts of college life to adulthood. Much like university clubs, circles allow you to dive into shared interests in unique topics and activities that otherwise lack a space to be explored in our lives. You can read more about the circles project, and see all circles we are hosting this round, on this page.
