[Discussion] On Confucianism
詳細
Confucianism is one of the most influential philosophies in history. It has had an impact on East Asian life, social structures and system of values comparable to the influence of Christianity on the West. Yet, many people are only vaguely familiar with it, even in societies it has deeply shaped.
The extent of Confucianist ideas can still be felt today in values like respect for hierarchy, duty to family, and the belief that social harmony matters more than individual self-expression. Where many Western philosophical traditions emphasize the individual and abstract moral principles, Confucianism focuses on how we should act within our relationships: as children, parents, friends, leaders, and members of a community.
In this meetup, we'll be discussing Confucianism ethics and values, exploring questions such as:
- Is it better to express yourself honestly, or to preserve harmony?
- Do we owe more to our family than to strangers?
- Should society prioritize individual freedom, or people fulfilling their roles well?
No background in philosophy is required. Only curiosity, intellectual honesty, and a willingness to examine your own assumptions.
