A new exhibition by Tokyo-based illustrator Pavel Shipkin, "100 Views of Edo Convenience Stores," will be held at the Jinny Street Gallery, a street art gallery in Jingumae 2-chome, from Friday, April 11 to Friday, May 9.
The exhibition features intricately drawn hanging scrolls, expressing a world where the traditions of the Edo period and the energy of modern Tokyo coexist.
In addition, during the exhibition period, a limited edition label of Ginny Lemon Sour (the gallery's official drink) featuring Pavel Shipkin's artwork will be available. It will be sold exclusively at some restaurants in Jingumae 2-chome.
Can the old and the new coexist? An exhibition exploring the possibilities of the atmosphere of different eras moving in harmony will be held at the Jinny Street Gallery.
In "100 Views of Edo Convenience Stores," which will begin on Friday, April 11, 2025, artist Pavel Shipkin will uneasy the hanging scroll art of how the traditions of Edo and the energy of modern Tokyo coexist.
Pavel Shipkin says of the exhibition, "Each composition, with its swirling colors and shapes, captures the pulse of the city, and considers the moment when the old speaks to the new, and the new resonates with the old." I hope that everyone will enjoy the exhibition.
■Convenience stores as a symbol of modern Tokyo
Artist Pavel Shipkin does not think of convenience stores simply, but sees them as special spaces where the past and present intersect.
"Convenience stores bring nostalgia and a sense of security amid the conflicts of the city. It's like a habit that is rooted in everyday life," says the artist.
The narrow aisles and fluorescent lights of convenience stores depicted by Pavel Shipkin may look ordinary at first glance, but there is a deeper meaning behind them. In Pavel Shipkin's work, the aisles symbolize life choices, and the fluorescent lights symbolize the fleeting glow of the city.
"For me, convenience stores are a part of everyday life, but they also seem to be places where the times intersect."
In Pavel Zipkin's view, convenience stores go beyond unconscious commercial facilities and are reinterpreted as symbolic spaces where modernity coexists and where the complexity of society and people's understanding intersect.
■A modern perspective on old stories
Pavel Zipkin reinterprets the monsters and characters that appear in old Japanese stories in modern urban environments.
He portrays the worldview of modern urban spaces, unlike the traditional image of ghosts lurking in dark forests and hidden places.
In "One Hundred Views of Edo Convenience Stores," Pavel Zipkin imagines these characters in a fantasy setting of modern Edo, showing how the emotions based on old folklore continue to resonate even today.
■ Announcement of the opening event and limited edition label of Ginny Lemon Sour
The opening event of "100 Views of Edo Convenience Stores" will be held on April 11, 2025 at "Ninny Nyi", an art space bar adjacent to Jinny Street Gallery (2-3-23 Jingumae, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo 150-0001). On the day, you can enjoy an "artist walk" around the gallery with artist Pavel Zipkin, and hear a direct commentary on the exhibition. This special lemon sour was created in collaboration with Open Book Lemon Sour Specialty Store in Shinjuku, and has an art theme. Only 300 cans of "Ginny Lemon Sour" with a limited edition label designed by Zipkin will be sold. Please come and enjoy a special moment with art at the opening event.

About the artist: Pavel Shipkin (born 1988) is an architect and conceptual artist from Russia currently based in Tokyo. Currently working in collaboration with Kengo Kuma & Associates, his work fuses contemporary graffiti with traditional Japanese aesthetics, resulting in surreal and realistic visuals. Pavel Shipkin offers new creative perspectives by imagining how the old and the new coexist and interpreting the past and present into a palette. ■Details of the exhibition

神宮前二丁目の路上アートギャラリー 「Jinny Street Gallery」 にて、東京を拠点とするイラストレーター パベル・シプキン による新たな展示 「江戸コンビニ百景」 が 4月11日(金) から 5月9日(金)まで開催されます。
本展では、精緻に描かれた掛け軸作品を通じて、江戸時代の伝統と現代の東京のエネルギーが共存する世界を表現。コンビニという身近な存在を題材に、過去と現在が交差するユニークな視点を提示します。
また、展示期間中は、パベル・シプキンのアートワークをあしらった Jinny Lemon Sour（ギャラリーの公式ドリンク）の限定ラベルが登場。神宮前二丁目の一部飲食店にて特別販売されます。


古き時代と新しい時代は、共に存在することができるのか。異なる時代の空気が調和しながら動く、その可能性を探る展覧会がJinny Street Galleryで開催されます。
2025年4月11日(金)より始まる 「江戸コンビニ百景」 では、アーティスト パベル・シプキンが、江戸の伝統と現代の東京のエネルギーが共存する様子を、掛け軸アートに描き出します。筆致は都市のリズムを映し出し、力強いストロークと繊細な伝統的表現が交差することで、過去と現在の美しさを織り交ぜています。
パベル・シプキンは本展について、「色と形が渦巻く各構図は、街の鼓動を捉え、古きものが新しきものに語りかけ、新しきものが古きものを響かせる瞬間を映し出す」と語ります。伝統と現代が衝突するのではなく、互いに響き合い、共鳴し続ける…そんな世界観を本展を通じて体感してもらいたいと考えています。

### ■コンビニを現代東京の象徴として

アーティストのパベル・シプキンは、コンビニを単なる利便性の象徴ではなく、過去と現在が交差する特別な空間として捉えています。
「コンビニは都市の喧騒の中で、ノスタルジーと安心感をもたらす存在。それは、日常に根付いた習慣のようなものだ」とアーティストは語ります。
パベル・シプキンの描くコンビニの狭い通路や蛍光灯の光は、一見普通に見えますが、その背後には深い意味があります。そこは、古きものが現代に息づく場所であり、日常の中に溶け込んだ聖域です。パベル・シプキンの作品では、通路が人生の選択を、蛍光灯の光が都市の中の儚い輝きを象徴しています。
「私にとってコンビニは日常にありながら、時代の変遷が交わる場所でもあるように見える。」
パベル・シプキンの視点を通じて、コンビニは単なる商業施設を超え、新旧が共存し、現代社会の複雑さと人々の営みが交錯する象徴的な空間として再解釈されます。


### ■古き物語に現代的な視点を

パベル・ジプキンは、日本の古き物語に登場する妖怪やキャラクターを現代の都市環境に再解釈しています。
彼は、従来の幽霊のイメージである暗い森や隠れた場所に潜む存在とは異なり、現代の都市空間における新しい世界観を描いています。「私の解釈の中では、幽霊は忙しい地下鉄駅から現れる霊的な存在として描かれることがある。長い髪が群衆の中を流れるように。」
『江戸コンビニ百景』では、パベル・ジプキンはこれらのキャラクターを空想の現代の江戸という舞台を想像し、昔の民間伝承に基づいた感情が今でも色褪せずに共鳴し続けていることを示しています。


### ■オープニングイベントとJinny Lemon Sourの限定版ラベルの発表

「江戸コンビニ百景」のオープニングイベントは、2025年4月11日にJinny Street Galleryに隣接するアートスペース・バーの「ニニニ・ニー」（〒150-0001 東京都渋谷区神宮前２丁目３−２３）で開催されます。当日は、作家のパベル・ジプキンと共にギャラリーを巡る「アーティスト・ウォーク」を楽しめるほか、展示について直接解説を聞くことができます。また、Jinny Street Galleryのオリジナルドリンク「Jinny Lemon Sour」をフードと一緒にお楽しみいただけます。この特別なレモンサワーは、新宿のOpen Bookレモンサワー専門店とのコラボレーションで生まれ、アートをテーマにしています。しぷきんがデザインした限定ラベルの「Jinny Lemon Sour」は300缶のみの限定販売となります。ぜひオープニングイベントで、アートとともに特別なひとときをお楽しみください。

### ■アーティストについて

パベル・ジプキン（1988年生まれ）は、ロシア出身で現在東京を拠点に活動する建築家兼コンセプチュアルアーティストです。現在、隈研吾建築都市設計事務所と協力して活動している彼の作品は、現代のグラフィティと伝統的な日本の美学を融合させ、シュールで現実的なビジュアルの作品を生み出しています。彼のアートは、伝統文化と現代の生活が交差する点を探求し、東京の進化するアイデンティティに対する新しい視点を提供しています。
パベル・ジプキンは、古いものと新しいものがどのように共存するかを想像し、過去と現在を鮮やかに解釈することで、新しい創造的な視点を提供しています。
