PDXNode tonight! Using Node in machine learning with Suz Hinton & The awesome choo frontend framework with Bret Comnes!

Node friends!

We're not backing down in bringing the very best of Node both here and abroad. It's our mission to be one of best places in Portland for you to learn about what's relevant in the Node/JavaScript universe, and get plugged in with the amazing people in our community who make it happen.

In July, we broadened our perspective with Kyle Drake & Julio Barros:

This month we're forward thinking with Suz Hinton on how Node can assist machine learning, and getting introduced to choojs–the stellar new frontend framework with Bret Comnes!

Welcome to PDXNode: August Edition

Up first is the amazing Suz Hinton.

Suz is a master wizard. When she's not coding up awesome things at Microsoft–she's pushing the boundaries of Node & hardware, live coding open source projects on Twitch, empowering makers, and speaking around the world. As one of the most inspiring people in the Node universe, we couldn't be more thrilled to have her with us remotely from Brooklyn, NY.

Tonight she'll talk about: "Unpacking the Hype of Machine Learning"

Suz will give a basic overview of what machine learning is, what it's used for, and how you can use NodeJS to train your own models to be only an API call away.

Closing out our evening is Portland's own, Bret Comnes.

Bret is a super positive force in the Portland JS scene. He's been actively working on hypermodules and the choojs project for some time–building awesome apps and paving the way for the best alternative front end framework out there, which is what he's here to talk about.

Want to quickly build out your app's front end but don't wan't the headache of being tied down to a particular framework & don't care to waste time with a complex setup like React/Redux? Need something simple, minimal, and effective? Choo is here to help. It's been adopted & used by Google, and the Washington Post, just to name a few users.

Bret is here to help us get to know choo, and talk about the new choo6 release!

New to Node?
If you're new to Node and want to get up and running for the first time, please let any of the organizers know, and we will do our best to help you get your Node-needs met. Whether it's getting Node installed on your machine for the first time, or if you're looking for some great resources, we'll try to answer any questions you may have.

Looking for work?
Early in the night we'll give the floor to individuals and teams who're looking to hire people for open positions. We'll also ask the group if anyone is currently looking for work–so we can sync up employers and those looking to be employed to talk more. 😎

After we wrap up our time at Vacasa, one of our organizers will lead a charge to an afterparty. Anyone is welcome to join! Come get to know your Node community better! (probably 21+)

Food will be provided by our wonderful sponsor ProFocus, so be sure to thank anyone from their team if you see 'em! Come ready to munch and hang! 🍕🍻🍴

Thanks to Kyle Anderson, we film all of our talks and publish them on our youtube channel. Check 'em out! 📽

PDXNode Hacknights!
We're doing hack-nights every last Thursday now! Our next meetup is 2 weeks from today at the Ctrl-h Hackerspace. See you there!

We're also actively looking for mentors to jump in and pair up with new developers who're looking to get their feet wet. If you're interested in helping in this way at our hack nights, please let us know!

We need Speakers!
If you are interested in presenting at PDXNode, please submit an issue outlining:

  • Who you are
  • What your talk and/or demo is about.
  • The intended duration of your talk: 10, 20, or 30 minutes.
  • Which month you want to speak.

Be sure to submit! 🙌

We need organizers!
If you're interested in helping us organize and make PDXNode awesome, please let us know. We want to get you plugged in! Contact obensource, for more info–feel free to reply to this email! 🍻

See you there!
