The topic will cover **Service Meshes and API Management**, and should be extremely interesting and engaging. [Christian Posta](https://2022.allthingsopen.org/speakers/christian-posta/), Global Field CTO at Solo.io will be the featured speaker.

**Food and beverages will be served, networking opportunities will abound, and some really cool swag (shirts and hats) will be available.**

2). Follow signs for IBM Software Group Main Lobby B500 and take third left (DEVELOPMENT LANE) toward Main Lobby 500.

**Talk Topic/Title:**
Blurring Boundaries: A Sidecar-less Service Mesh for Federated API Management

**Talk Abstract:**
As the landscape of API architectures evolves, so does the maturity of API management strategies. Common views have often differentiated API Gateways and Service Mesh as solutions addressing distinct problems; however, their convergence is becoming increasingly apparent, especially in large-scale implementations like those seen at Google. With the advent of Istio's Ambient mode—a sidecar-less data plane—this convergence has crystallized, merging the functionalities of API Gateways and Service Mesh into a cohesive, Federated API management framework.

This talk will explore the transformative impact of Istio Ambient mode, which marries the scalability and robustness of a service mesh with the direct API management capabilities of gateways. This fusion presents an architecture reminiscent of Microgateway deployments but without their associated operational challenges, thereby enabling a federated approach to API management that enhances scale, tenancy, and self-service capabilities.

Key discussion points will include:

* Enhancing authentication and authorization processes between APIs using modern, open-source technologies like Envoy proxy.
* Eliminating inefficient centralized hair-pinning by leveraging a distributed, sidecar-less mesh.
* Facilitating developer autonomy through improved API self-service and management interfaces.
* Implementing resilient failover strategies that ensure high availability and robustness of API services.
* Adapting traditional API gateways to function as microgateways for internal (east-west) API traffic,
* optimizing both control and data flow within services.
